ADJECTIVES:“Adjectives are words that
describe nouns by telling what
kind, how many, or which
one.”

The

magnificent butterfly flew
under the branch.
The butterfly with the colorful
wings rested.
One butterfly flew quietly
beneath the tree.
The butterfly fluttered its
delicate wings.

ATTRIBUTIVE
Adjectives

in the first position before the noun - are called
ATTRIBUTIVE adjectives.
the blue sea
 the old man
happy children

PREDICATIVE
Adjectives

in the second position
- after the noun - are called
PREDICATIVE adjectives.
Notice that predicative
adjectives do not occur
immediately after the noun.
Instead, they follow a verb.
the sea is blue
the man is old
the children are happy

KINDS OF ADJECTIVES
Descriptive adjective or adjective of
quality
“These adjectives describe nouns
that refer to action, state, or quality”
Descriptive adjectives are the most numerous of
the different types of adjectives.
(careless, dangerous, excited, sad, black, white,
big, small, long, fat, English, three-cornered)
 Example: dangerous chemicals, green
vegetables, a square box, a big house,
a tall tree, a cold morning, a true story,
English language.

KINDS OF ADJECTIVES
Adjective of quantity
“An adjective of quantity tells
us the number (how many)or
amount (how much)of a noun.”
He has eaten three apples.
I don’t have much money.
There is so much wine for
the guests.
This long, thin centipede has
many legs.

KINDS OF ADJECTIVES
Adjective of numbers or
numeral adjective
“Adjective which express the number
of persons or things are called the
adjective of number or numeral
adjective.”
I wrote two letters.
• There are seven days in a week.
• I have learnt many languages.
• Most boys like cricket.


KINDS OF ADJECTIVES
Distributive adjective
“Distributive Adjective expresses
the distributive state of nouns.”
 Each

one of you should support this cause.
 I mean that every employee has stake in
the growth of this company.
 Neither of you can go away
from other.
 Every boy has one or the other pet.

KINDS OF ADJECTIVES
Demonstrative

adjective

“A demonstrative adjective (this, that,
these, those) shows the noun it modifies is
singular
or plural and whether the position of the
noun is near or far from the person who is
speaking or writing.”
 This

red balloon is mine and those
three yellow ones are yours.
 This cute baby is his brother. That cute
baby is his sister.
 These two fat cats have tails, but that
thin cat doesn’t have a tail.

KINDS OF ADJECTIVES
Possessive adjective
A

possessive adjective expresses
possession of a noun by someone or
something. Possessive adjectives are
the same as possessive pronouns.

 This

must be your cap.
 Its skin is dry and rough.
 Our grandmothers were classmates.
 His

arms have a few tattoos.
