Adil SARI (13-19 April 2015)
Assignment: Unit 305 Understanding assessment in education and training.
Task B – Hand-out
18/05/2015
a) A brief explanation of the key features for each of the following types of assessment
Initial assessment - identifying learner needs. For an initial assessment, I would incorporate a questionnaire and self-assessment task. With the use of questionnaire before I start my training, I can easily collect the information needed from the learner including the learning support, expectations and the like. If any learner needs any special learning technique or help for example Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia or any other learning difficulties; I use unique instructional methods, materials, learning aids, and equipment to meet the educational needs of learner. Also power point handouts if English is not their first language,
Formative assessment - When incorporated into classroom practice, the formative assessment process provides information needed to adjust teaching and learning while they are still happening. The process serves as practice for the student and a check for understanding during the learning process. The formative assessment process guides teachers in making decisions about future instruction. Questioning, Discussion and Observations are a few examples that I used in the classroom during the formative assessment process to collect evidence of student learning.
Summative assessment - Summative assessments are set to enable me to evaluate, and assign a mark to staff learning. At the end of the First Aid at Work training I use a gapped handout questions and multi choice test to summatively assess theory elements, providing evidence of their level of understanding. I will advise the ESOL learner to ask for clarification of the questions if required. By using a variety of methods appropriate to the domain, both formal and informal, I will be evidencing learning and meeting

Formative – Formative assessment should take place continually throughout the learners’ time on the programme and allow for development and improvement to take place. Simply asking questions and observing can allow the tutor to give on-going feedback to enable the learner to develop further, before a final assessment can take place. By assessing the learners on a formative basis the tutor can see if they are ready to undertake a summative assessment. The tutor can use activities, quizzes and short tasks for the learners to carry out which will highlight areas that require further development.…

The role of initial assessment assists in the process of determining suitability of learners for a certain subject. It also assists me as a tutor in acquiring a learner’s prior knowledge of a subject. Initial assessment is used at the start of a qualification and will give me an understanding of the level that a learner is currently working at, and where they may need additional support. Part of our initial assessment process is to get the learner to complete a ‘persona skills diagnostic’ which will allow me to look at the learners’ strengths and weaknesses. Initial and diagnostic assessment will help to form the basics of where a learner should begin their programme of learning. Following initial assessment, I will begin the process of diagnostic testing which will highlight any key areas that a learner may require extra support. Once the needs of a learner have been identified, I can then work with learners on an individual basis to start to agree and set learning goals and targets. It’s important to remember that initial and diagnostic assessments form part of the application for learning. Continual assessment should take place throughout the duration of the learning experience. Once I have considered the results from the initial and diagnostic assessments I will be able to work with my learner to develop individual learning goals and targets and I will be able to focus particularly on the areas of development. To conduct initial and diagnostic assessments the company I work for use Maths and English testing, questionnaires and self-assessments. I will also use observation and oral questioning as part of the initial assessment.…

When learners begin our course, they undergo certain assessments as well as discussions with tutors to help identify their individual learning needs. This helps when planning my sessions as there are many circumstances that I need to consider to ensure that all learners’ needs are catered for. An Initial Assessment Summary helps tutors build a profile on the learner to help take into consideration any specific needs they may have. It is then my role to ensure that these needs are met in my sessions. Initial assessments in Maths and English determine what level the individual is working at and then they sit a diagnostic at the level according to their initial assessment result. This diagnostic also gives us an indication as to whether…

An example of teachers using formative assessments are asking the students questions during instruction, giving the students a quiz at the end of the day’s lesson, and allowing the students to write a one page summary of the lesson that was taught. If the students do not show…
