Adidas roped in the image of Missy Elliot to its brand in 2002 to cater to the new market segment of 12-24 that needed a cool theme to go with the product rather than the utility of the product. Adidas being in the apparel business made more sense if they combined their product with style and fashion and Missy Elliot was the Hip-Hop goddess of the time which had a strong influence on urban style and fashion. Adidas was successful in connecting footwear to style, style to music, music to a diva and diva worship to lifestyle. Adidas tried to segment itself different from Nike, which went well with the sports(basketball(Jordans)) theme and aligned it with youth style and music.…

Nike, who currently ranks as 136 in the fortune 500 for America’s largest corporations, has come a long way since its humble beginning of in the 1960’s. Founded by visionaries Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight who at the time had no clue how much of an impact this footwear would make in the marketing world. Bill Bowerman was a track and field coach at the University of Oregon with enormous amount of knowledge on athletics and was always looking to help his players maintain the advantage. “Bowerman's 24 years as coach at the University of Oregon, he developed many of the world's best distance and middle-distance runners, among them Steve Prefontaine and Alberto Salazar. The company strategy that Nike uses is an ingenious one. A strategy that founder Phil Knight thought of while still in school at Stanford. Instead of paying Americans to put together Nike’s shoes, Knight thought that it would be a better idea to take manufacturing plants overseas to places where labor is much cheaper than in the U.S., places like Taiwan and South Korea. With 86% of its products being produced in one of those two countries and Nike employing a large number of people who lived there, the countries were becoming more wealthy until Knight decided prices were too high to manufacture there anymore (Hitting the Wall, 3). With this in mind he decided to move the factories to places in China like Indonesia where countries were not yet fully developed. This seemed to work and production was going well until the early 1990s when labor strikes rose to 112 in 1991 and news began to leak out about the terrible conditions Nike’s labor force was working in. The subcontractor companies that Nike hired overseas were using underage workers and brutally underpaying them. The pay was so low that a family couldn’t even survive off of the wages made at a Nike factory even while working six days a week. Nike’s sales than began to decline and the company was once again dealing with the negative brand issues that came about numerous times in the 90s for their bad labor practices.…

In the 1950’s, Bill Bowerman, a track and field coach at the University of Oregon, began cobbling shoes for his runners. Bowerman and one of his runners Phil Knight formed Blue Ribbon Sports and sold shoes for Tiger shoes in 1964. While Knight was selling the shoes, Bowerman was ripping them apart to see how he could make them lighter and made his runners test his improved shoes. Their first full-time employee, Jeff Johnson, was an early designer of shoes and came up with the name Nike in 1971. In 1972, the BRS broke business with Tiger shoes and Nike, along with its brand marked “Swoosh”, debuted its new line of footwear. Their first endorsed athlete, Steve Prefontaine, wore Nike’s light weight shoes with an outsole that had waffle-type nubs for traction ("Nike inc.," 2011).…
