Project Title:
To investigate the fairness of a particular coin being used by a cricket umpire of ** ********* *****’ High School.
Purpose of Project:
Problem Statement: The Cricket Club of *** has been hosting a cricket competition over the past couple weeks. The Physical Education Captain of the school was delegated the position of umpire, and has therefore been making the coin toss at the start of each cricket match, using a special coin. However, many cricket captains have become suspicious of the said Physical Education Captain and have begun to question her integrity after failing to win a toss for several subsequent matches, with respective subsequent tosses. It is being thought that she is unfairly manipulating the tosses . This dilemma was reported to the Physical Education teacher of the school. It was decided that if the Physical Education Captain was indeed, proven guilty, she would be stripped of her reputable position, since such practices do not support good sportsmanship. With her integrity and position at stake, it is therefore necessary to carry out a series of similar coin tosses in order to determine whether or not the said Physical Education Captain is, in fact, unfairly manipulating the outcome. By the laws which govern classical probability, it can be said that the probability of a fair coin landing as heads or tails during a toss is 0.5. If a series of subsequent coin tosses are carried out and one outcome is being particularly favoured, therein lies the probability of the coin being fixed, or biased. This may be due to external factors, namely which hand was used to make the toss and which coin face was turned upwards. By means of a series of simple experiments using the same coin as the Physical Education Captain, I seek to determine whether or not varying factors of the manner of throwing the coin do, in fact, influence the outcome. This is given that the coin tosses are conducted in a non-uniform manner by the

In Part 1, what was the expected ratio of heads to tails for tosses of a single coin? 1:1. Did your results always agree with the expected ratio? If not, what would be a reason for the deviation? My results did not always agree with the expected ratio and the reason for the deviation would be that the principles of probability made it possible to get either sides of the coin a 50:50 chance but it’s not probable.…

Cricket has been intertwined in the life of West Indians since it arrived in the islands. It has been a representation of injustice and prejudice as well as a conduit for social and political triumph in the West Indies. The development of cricket, as not just another game, mirrors the question for decolonization from Britain and also the struggles of nationalist and independence endeavors. Throughout its lifespan, the West Indies cricket team has been an institution where racial divide was present and then conquered, mirroring the social and political flows evident in mainstream society. Its legacy and continuation validates C.L.R James statement that “There is an intimate connection between cricket and west Indian social and political life”.…

The first experiment done by the class was called “Introduction to Experimentation”. Its main objective is to give basic knowledge about some of the logic of experimentation. The class was divided into groups of 2. In each group there was an experimenter (E) and a subject (S). The experimenter instructed the subject to write the alphabet backwards (from Z to A) within 30 seconds. There were 5 trials of 30 second intervals. After every trial the subject was asked to estimate the number of letters expected to be written correctly in the next trial. As the results showed, only 2 out of the 9 subjects were able to perfect the experiment. Majority of the 9 subjects committed atleast 2 errors in a trial. The most errors committed by a subject were 7 errors. As a conclusion, it can be said that the main objective of this experiment was accomplished. The class exhibited notable scores during the course of the activity and important lessons were relayed.…
