Task C2
Specification reference 5.1 Measure temperature changes accompanying some of the following types of change: b neutralisation reactions

Part A - Planning Student Brief
This controlled assessment is about neutralisation reactions, which take place when an acid reacts with an alkali. Neutralisation reactions are exothermic, and the temperature rise depends on a number of factors, including: • • • the concentration of the acid or the alkali the volume of the acid or the alkali which acid and alkali are used.

Write a plan that will allow you to find out about how a factor affects the temperature rise in neutralisation reactions. How to attempt the task: • • • • • You should include a hypothesis that you are planning to test. You should include an explanation of which equipment you need to complete the task. You may want to draw a diagram of how the equipment will be set up. You should decide which variable (or variables) you will change and which you will keep the same. Decide which measurements you should make to test the hypothesis, including the number and range of measurements. You should consider any risks that are linked to the practical task and how you can reduce these to make your practical task safer.
