ADCHEM’S APPROACH TO SELLING CLEBAL™ INTO GUATEMALA

Following a review of the newspaper article, our recent law suit and events over the last one year concerning the sale of Clebal™ into Guatemala please find below my proposal, rationale for the proposal and proposed implementation plan:
PROPOSAL

A. Our organization should consider adding mustard oil to Clebal™ even though this might result in an initial drop in sales because of the increased cost of manufacture However, in the long term, this is a significantly lower cost compared to the potential long term revenue loss resulting from poor consumer confidence owing to negative press and eventual costs from legal claims for wrongful death – both of which could be reduced by the modification of the constituents of Clebal™ with mustard oil.
B. No changes be made to the direct sales method of distribution in Guatemala.
RATIONALE

By adding mustard oil to Clebal™ will avoid violations of consumers trust and legal liability for deaths caused by the use of Clebal™. I estimate that, by adding mustard oil to Clebal™ there could be a drop in sales due to a reduction in the effectiveness of Clebal™ (30% weaker), Moreover, eventual revenue from the sales of Clebal™ could well be reduced and production costs increased, in amounts difficult to estimate, as shoe manufacturers may look for substitute adhesives to Clebal™ and competitors may gain market share due to the change. However, in spite of the aforementioned disadvantages, I propose that AdChem should still consider adding mustard oil to Clebal™ because risking the lives of an estimated 5,000 children in Guatemala with a known toxic toluene based adhesive (Clebal™) could undermine AdChem’s reputation with all customers for an indefinite period not just for Clebal™ but for all AdChem branded products. There is also the potential cost of legal claims from at least some of the estimated 5000 Guatemalan children

We have decided that the core issue surround the company is how to reach the goal of $40 million. They need to address the possible alternatives of either expanding into other products besides footwear, implementing a more aggressive marketing strategy, changing their 2-year goals completely, or maintaining the status quo. These alternatives will depend on the assessment of the time frame, cost, and current and potential competition. Upon analyzing all situations and alternatives, we have decided that the best solution for Holey Soles would be to expand the company by creating other product lines made form their trademarked technology. Only through this method will they be able to generate enough revenue to meet their $40 million goal.…

    Let's face it, when a woman arrives at a nail salon, the first thing she thinks about is the color of polish she is choosing or how excited she is to pamper herself. The last thing on her mind are the toxins that are in the actual nail polish. Little does she know, there are plenty of chemical compounds that are in each nail polish bottle, three of which are very toxic. They are formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl pthlate (DBP)-also known as the "toxic trio." These three toxins are in many famous nail polishes including the two leading brands, OPI and Essie. In 2006, a group of young women activists fought to eliminate the toxins, and they did. However, in 2012, the polishes were tested and to their surprise, the three toxins still existed. Why is this so? The Food and Drug Administration does not have any authority over companies to make them prove that products are safe before they are placed on shelves for consumers to buy, neither do they have control to demand a recall. With that said, this project was put together so that daily nail polish users can be more alert when buying or choosing a nail polish at a salon. During the Cold War there were many factors involved and many events that led to the Guatemala of today.     H.B. Fuller’s moral obligations in this case are to do everything they can to prevent illegal distribution and use of their products. Being the leading manufacturer of industrial glues worldwide, it is impossible for the company to get rid of products that kids are misusing. Yes, the company can take steps to stop it, which they are by not selling it to retailors and small business owners in Honduras and Guatemala where the biggest abuse problem is. However, this company cannot be morally responsible for every single person who chooses to use their product in the wrong way. They are also morally obligated to their clients who actually do use their glue for the right purposes. If their best product is no longer sold, construction and manufacturing in these countries might also take a hit because they will not be able to use the products that they need to get the job done.…
