Actuarial Personal Statement
I believe in leading an enriching and challenging life, since one has only one chance to live, and yearn for changes and new experiences in my life. With this undying passion for continual improvement and enrichment, I chose to study abroad. The thought of studying in the UK excites me as I find the rich culture and history captivating, and so, I applied to study in the UK. I do not foresee a problem with language as I receive education with the English language as the medium, and I have passed the GCE O? level English examination.

I choose to study Actuarial Science as I plan and desire to be an actuary. Furthermore, I believe that I can excel in this area of studies as well as in this profession. Mathematics has always been one of my strongest and favourite subjects, and I have attained consistent good results in mathematics. In addition, the mathematics project, which my teammate and I worked on, has been awarded with the Platinum award by our college, a highest attainable and newly included award to complement us for the excellent project and the tremendous effort we had put in.

Other than academic studies, I play sports like soccer, basketball and badminton. I have an interest in cycling as well. I have represented all the schools I have attended in national badminton competitions. The best result my team has achieved is the championship trophy we fought hard for and won in the year 1999 when I was the captain of the C? division badminton team (consists secondary one and two students) in my secondary school. According to Vernon Law, ?Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards.? I held leadership positions in my secondary school and junior college, and these opportunities to lead has provided me with invaluable lessons on leadership and communication skills. I have certainly learnt a great deal on effective communication within my team and with the teacher-in-charge. The organisation of several school events that

As a section leader, I was the example of how the section should act, present, and conduct them. I was also the captain of the golf and tennis teams, first leading by examples through my actions and then through my playing skills. At my home church, I am the Youth Director providing an example of how to live as a young Christian despite the temptation of peer pressure. While here at JMU, I am currently serving as a mentor at the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County Boys and Girls Club to disadvantaged to youth. Just furthering my education beyond high school is the primary and first example of leadership. The kids at the club can look to me and see that I was once just like them but I’ve pushed through and maybe they can…

I came to ATA because I’m in the Connect program and to take the fire rescue course here at the ATA. I choose fire rescue because I like to help people out in situations that they are facing in their life. Also, at the ATA, we do a lot of hands-on and verbal materials in the fire rescue course and pass all of the certifications to become a firefighter. My other goal is to go to Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) for my Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). In a few years after I get my EMT I will go back to HGTC for my Paramedic License and get paid to do this type of work every time I’m on shift. Analyzing as a firefighter has revealed that it suits my Introvert, iNtuition, Thinking, Judging (INTJ) personality. My Visual learning style, and my skills are doing hands-on materials. However, A will have to improve a little bit more communication to others in my field to be…

In 5th grade teachers, in my opinion, try and build leadership skills. We did “ice breakers” or games that helped us get to know each other. In those games we had to build towers out of index cards and whoever had the tallest tower won. In those game leadership is necessary because if no one steps up, the building process will be disorganized and hectic. In my group no one stood up to corral the group so I took charge. That moment showed me that I can be a leader and that linked back to soccer because in soccer leadership is important if you want to help your team succeed. Now I strive to be a leader in every situation that comes my…

During the summer before my senior year of high school, I was involved in one of the most influential opportunities I had ever encountered. I was given the chance to volunteer my time at Schneck Medical Center. I chose to volunteer in the rehabilitation department; this helped fuel my desire to want to become a physical therapist. While at the rehabilitation center, I got involved in multiple positions that taught me how to be a better leader and how to successfully use teamwork. Working in the office taught me leadership roles. While in the office, I had to check the patients in for their appointments and paged therapists for their appointments. This position showed me how to take charge and make sure that things in the rehabilitation center…

Joining the future business leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, becoming a youth leader at Christ Church, as well as many other volunteering activities helped me enrich my community, and make an impact in the world around me. Along with these organizations, I have played several sports in high school, in my junior and senior years I settled on my two favorite sports, track and field, and volleyball. Within these sports I have made friendships with my teammates I will never forget, and learned important lessons in humbleness when winning, and cohere with my friends when losing. By being a member of any sports teams at my high school, I regularly attended many of my school’s events, giving me the opportunity to develop relationships, and gain a tremendous sense of pride in my school. I am looking forward to bringing this same sense of pride to my college, and making many new friendships along the way. I learned over the course of my education to this point, that when I became more involved with these activities, my performance in the classroom increased alongside my…

I am a great leader and throughout my high school career I have taken every opportunity I could to display this. For three out of my four years I have participated as a Muskoka Woods Leader. This required me to spend a week at a summer camp at which I would lead a group of grade 7s through a series of fun activities. Being a leader at this camp wasn't always fun and games though. I had encountered many situations with the grade 7s in which I would have to improvise and apply my knowledge of leadership to sort out. For example, during one of our games we would play, there was a little boy who was sitting off on the side not participating. I went over to talk to the boy to find out what was wrong. When I found out that he didn't understand how to play the game I knew exactly how to fix it. I brought him over to a corner and me and him played our own little one on one version of the game. I taught him how to play and I played with him until he was finally ready to join the other grade 7s. As well as being a Muskoka Leader, in my grade 11 year, I was a Link Leader for my high school. This was different from being a Muskoka Leader because this time I was working with grade 9 students who were entering high school. Throughout the year I worked with the grade 9s giving them secret tips and tricks about how they could survive their freshman year of high…

The student I interviewed was Japanese. Her name was Emiko. Emiko learned English in secondary school and she found it quite difficult. After leaving school she did a secretarial course and spent some time working as a secretary. She has a passion for cooking. She found out about the Ballymaloe Cookery School and she became very interested in pursuing a cookery course there. Her research confirmed that the school had indeed a very good reputation and Emiko became anxious to experience the cookery school for herself. Emiko attended English classes in Japan with a clear goal of improving her oral English. She was not altogether happy with her progress rate and decided to come to Ireland to learn English in an English speaking country and to get a feel for the way English is spoken in Ireland. Emiko has been in Ireland since October 2010 and is happy that she came here to learn English. She is looking forward to her cookery course in Ballymaloe which will conclude her stay in Ireland. She hopes to use English in the future and believes that a good standard of English will help her achieve well paid employment in Japan.…

Heading into my senior year I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my life after receiving a high school diploma. From twelve years of education I learned mathematics is my strong suit and what I want my career focused around. After thorough research and five college visits, I am now certain that I am going to become an actuary. Becoming an actuary would fit my desire of using mathematics in my everyday work and preferred starting salary amount.
