Activity 4 What Are The Factors That Affect The Corn Market
A. 1What are the factors that affect the corn market (i.e. supply curve for corn production and demand curve for corn consumption) ?
The corn market can be negatively affected because of the weather and climate have an impact on the supply of the corn. With a bad weather condition, like drought, the survivability of the corn decreases. The total corn produced the u.s. is facing a large deduce, most of the people will be affected.
However the corn market can be positively affected. Firstly, if the government uses the new bio-technology and agricultural innovations to allow more corn to be produce, to makes sure that the productivity of the corn remain stable even though the u.s. is facing a serious drought. Secondly, there is a great demand in the corn market. The livestock industries relay on the corn heavily, as the people from other developing countries are eating more corn-fed meat. Furthermore the total population of the world is growing at a fast pace, more and more food if required, since corn is a cheaper food as compare to others, the demand of corn is higher. Hence there is an incentive in the farmers to produce more corn.
B. Using a supply-and-demand diagram, analyze and explain the price movements in the corn market.
Prices ($) per corn

*the statistic is made up

When the market demand for a products but the supply could not meet the demand, hence the price of the product will be increase as there is a limited amount of stocks to meet the demand. As shown on the diagram above, the equilibrium price will increase for $2, from supply 1, to $3, in supply 2.
The drought have heavily decreased the productivity of the corn, the price of the corn increased. The demand for the corn in the market is greatly, most of the livestock industries relay on corn heavily, the owners of the farm would be willing to pay more for the corn. In this case, the suppliers were unable to produce more products to meet the demand, hence they were able

Corn production has gone up due to the help of ammonia fertilizer. Corn farms do not practice organic agriculture. Crop yield has gone up four times compared to Ian and Curt’s ancestors in the early 1900’s with the help of fertilizers and herbicides to kill the weeds. The government subsidizes large farms to plant on more land and to buy out their neighbors if they do not want to grow crops. Farmers get rewarded for overproduction of cheap corn which keeps the production of corn going on full blast. Majority of the corn produced gets fed to animals or us in the form of high fructose corn syrup which is empty calories. Due to consolidation of family farms into large farming operations, the consumers are harmed while the cooperation benefit because they get cheap corn produced in surplus to turn into high fructose corn syrup or feed to sell to livestock producers. Consumers are harmed because more high fructose corn syrup is being produced and put into the foods we consume on a daily basis. Corn is in everything that we consume, such as sodas and hamburgers. High fructose corn syrup has adverse effects such as a higher risk of acquiring type 2 diabetes and obesity. The table sugar consumption has decreased, but high fructose corn syrup consumption has increased by 30% because it is cheaper to buy and produce. In the late 1980’s high fructose corn syrup has taken over half of the sweetener…

The overproduction and over supply of food also depressed prices in the markets for the farmers. Good growing weather and the government contributed to the overproduction on the farms. The government encouraged farmers to plant more crops and raise more livestock. This helped result in $0.08 corn, $0.10 oats, $0.02 beef, $0.00 butter, and $0.00 eggs (Document B).…

That is why scientists have been working to genetically modify corn so that the bad parts of the DNA are gone and replaced with better DNA. Genetic engineering is the splicing of genes so that the original code or DNA is changed to the modifiers liking. The genetic modification has helped in many ways. One main way it has helped is when corn seeds were planted the seeds were attacked and eaten by bugs. Genetic modification has helped strengthen the outer layer of the shell and has kept the bugs out. Also there were a few years where the corn crops died because of a drought. Then there steamed a whole bunch of new genetic strands of DNA that were drought resistant. This really helped a lot of farmers who were losing thousands of dollars to corn that was dying due to the drought. There are many different types of genetically engineered corn crops. There have to be a lot of DNA strands because scientists need to test them and see which strand works the best. The strand that works the best is sent out into the field to be planted along with the original strand of corn. The original strand of corn has to be planted along with the genetically engineered strand so that bugs don’t adapt to the new strand and destroy it. As of 2014 Illinois is the leading producer of corn. In Illinois agricultural commodities add up to 19 billion dollars, Corn accounts for 54% of that…
