Active Listening Analysis
The three key points that I learned regarding listening after the textbook reading and the Long Beach Community College (LBCC) Listening Skills Video are to set a goal to actively listen, be aware of potential distractions and practice this valuable skill. True active listening takes three important components which are: comprehending what is said, retaining the information and responding based on comprehension. For one to successfully complete the basic steps the individual must address the basic key components.

The first important step in active listening is to set a goal for yourself. Goals are important in careers, relationships, personal achievements so it makes sense that they are also important in listening. Goals assist in keeping us on track and staying focused. Goals also create a momentum to succeed in that most people like to feel as sense of accomplishment. Achieving a goal is a rewarding experience that incites feels of happiness.

This will reinforce the commitment to actively listen. A clear mind is a ready mind so it would be beneficial to make a conscious decision to leave any problems or concerns out of the environment, such as leaving personal issues outside the workplace. Practicing this critical skill is vital to improvement and continued success. While individuals can strive for a goal of always staying engaged, that is not a reality. Active listening will take time to improve and can be plagued with setbacks. To combat this the LBCC video discussed using your body to trick your brain into staying engaged in listening.
