INCREASING PUPIL’S PERFORMANCE IN SCIENCE AND HEALTH VI THROUGH REMEDIAL CLASSES IN MATICMATIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR 2011-2012
Science has been always noted as one of the most difficult subjects among the pupils of Maticmatic Elementary School. One of the problems is the shortage of textbook and workbooks that will develop the pupil’s skills. Poor attendance of the pupils also affects their learning. It is in these premises where there is a need to look into possible ways and means on how the pupils can acquire the skills, knowledge and information that will enrich and enhance their performance in Science. The researcher prompted to find out the effect of the use of remedial class on the performance in Science of Grade VI pupils. It has been noted that there was awfully low performance in Science and Health as revealed in the National Achievement Test (NAT) for school-year 2006 up to 2010, from 2006 to2009 the performance of the pupils in Maticmatic Elementary School fall on the following rating: 37.84%, 62.18%, 74.17 and 57.79% respectively which is lower than the 75% level of mastery set by the Department of Education. In 2010 the NAT result was 71.14% wherein it did not meet the mastery criterion of DepEd. It is for this reason that a study is made along the line of discovering one of the problems met by teachers in teaching Science is the lack of teaching and reading materials and remedial classes that cater to the individual needs of pupils and improve their performance in Science. Many pupils have shown that failures in other subjects have been due to misunderstanding of the concept of Science. In as much as teachers bear the major responsibility in the education of the child, it is important that they survive hard to work out ways of improving instructions. The school, considering the uniqueness of the person as an individual, believes that in any school population, there are pupils who fail to profit from the organization and curriculum of an average elementary school. Special provisions must therefore be made to enable these pupils to experience success in the learning process and thus develop self-confidence which is very essential for...
