The previous reading series also failed to assess the students’ comprehension after they read independently. The non-fluent readers spent so much effort on word identification; it is difficult for them to enjoy reading the selection. I believe this is one reason they enjoy being read to. Students can comprehend a story when it is read aloud to them, but it is their lack of fluency that inhibits comprehension when it is their turn to read.…

All reading instruction should serve the purpose of increasing comprehension (Lane, 2014). The mental process of comprehension begins before a child starts to read and continues throughout the entire reading process. The role of the educator in teaching comprehension is to model, share, guide and apply strategies whilst gradually releasing the responsibility onto the child. This begins with the educator demonstrating and explaining strategies, then scaffolding and encouraging the child to participate, practice and apply the strategies across all curriculum areas (PTSD, n.d.). According to (Department of Education WA, 2014) comprehension strategies are explicitly taught to emergent readers to develop their understanding of texts. Examples of these strategies are previewing and summarising. Previewing encourages children to make predictions about the text; it can also pique their interest. Children taught to summarise, can learn to determine the essential ideas within the text, intern furthering their comprehension skills (Department of Education WA,…

Before we continue, at this point it is important to define the term higher order reading skills. While many children can read individual words or indeed a string of words to form sentences they may not necessarily understand what it is they are reading about. Even a child who is a fluent reader may have difficulty in comprehending a text. “Fluency is important because it is closely related to comprehension” (www.ibe.unesco.org, 2008). This author continues by saying, “comprehension is the process of deriving meaning from connected text it involves word knowledge as well as thinking and reasoning.” Higher order reading skills help to develop a child’s ability to comprehend a text.…

Comprehension helps students understanding what they are reading. “Short term memory helps automatic decoding which is necessary for readers to comprehend and understand what they are reading” (Pardo, 2004, p.273). Pardo (2004) states that “Teachers help students get to this level of automatic decoding by providing instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics at all grade levels” (p. 273). Students in lower grades will work on phonemic awareness and phonics but older students will practice automatic decoding through spelling vocabulary and high word frequency (Pardo, 2004).…
