In the book Wednesday Wars, by Gary Schmidt, Holling’s sister Heather listens to music such as the Monkees and the Beatles usually when she is just sitting in her room. Heather listens to this music because she has interest in world peace, and these two bands made very happy music. The Beatles never were much for striking music like the Rolling Stones. For example, Mick Jagger had a very striking voice and the guitar was always hard hitting. The Beatles could only play a few chords and their band was mostly about the harmonics and hollow-body guitars. So, Holling’s sister listens to the more mellow bands like most people who thrive for peace would. This essay is going to employ one of the most famous bands of the 60’s rock music…
When I first heard “New Britain” I felt like I was back at my hometown church in Fort Worth. The song was full of joy and you could tell that the author wanted to praise God for his amazing grace. It gave me a sense of peace that was very uplifting. When it came to the musical piece “Florida”, I felt that there was a lot going on in one piece of music. One side of the room was singing different tones then the other side of the room, and there was a constant chiming in from the center of the room. The best way I could describe this song is by calling it a Feud, there was…
One of the motifs Mandel uses in both Station Eleven, the novel and the comic is the appearance of the sky. In the novel, there is a reoccurrence of a storm. The scenery after Arthur died was people drinking their sadness away, some crying and in shock. “The snow was almost abstract, a film about bad weather on a deserted street.”(Mandel 15) The storm as it is described outside the theater can add to the scene, as the day ended with the death of Arthur. As seen in movies, on TV or read in other novels, almost every time something terrible occurs, the weather usually has a connection with what is happening. The storm appears again when Tanya gives Kristen a paperweight described as a “…a lump of glass with a storm cloud trapped inside.”(Mandel…
Along with its fantasy world, Game of Thrones series have consistently depicted real life themes and characters. Ultimately, Game of Thrones can be claimed as a series based on real world drama illustrated in a fantasy world. In the present world, “we all have knowledge, love/hate, scheming politics, sex, isolation.” (Game of Thrones - Interview with George R.R. Martin). Similarly, Game of Thrones’ storylines revolves around these themes, in order to generate a world similar to ours. For instance, the title of the show Game of Thrones, can be regarded as a metaphor of devious politician. It is reasonably straightforward that this “show is a perfect metaphor for scorched-earth style of politics in a deeply divided red state/blue state America.”…
Laura Hillenbrand’s monumental Unbroken is a true story of a promising young Olympic runner from Torrance, California. This promise was soon broken because of the upcoming Second World War, a time period of ferocity and sadism. During this war, many were captivated, many died, only a few came out in a single piece known as war heroes. The war wasn’t the end for these heroes, many caught on with the phrase, post-war life. Post-war life had many survivors on another set of problematic and unforgettable experience. Most Americans initially viewed their place in the postwar world with optimism and confidence. But within two years of the end of the war, new challenges and perceived threats had arisen to erode that confidence. The ultimate hero was…

Of Mice and Men, a novella written by John Steinbeck, is a tragedy incorporating a hero with a tragic flaw, a climax, and a tragic resolution. The title of the novella, “Of Mice and Men”, is the first clue to Steinbeck’s specific cultural issues. The title is a line taken from a poem called, “To a Mouse”, by Robert Burns. This poem talks about man’s enslavement to forces of both elemental and human nature which cannot be controlled, destroying hopes and dreams. This stems into the theme of the loss of the American Dream. Along with alienation, the American Dream is a major theme explored throughout the course of the novel.…

A sense of belonging, family and traditions are all important aspects of life. The importance of these themes, particularly to Aboriginal Australians, is emphasised through Wayne Blair’s The Sapphires. The film provides an opportunity for the viewers to connect with these themes in a true and entertaining story of how four young Australian Aboriginal women and an Irish expatriate that bond together through culture and adversity in their journey from country NSW to war torn Vietnam. I loved the concept that all of their problems could be solved by complaining a bit over a brunch and then simply carrying on living it up. It is refreshing to see their worlds not coming to an end because they don’t have a job or husband. They are normal or even slightly better then…
There are many novels and books based on World War II, and the novel All But My Life by Gerda Weissmann Klein is about her amazing story and the knowledge and experience she picked up through her journey. She grew up in Germany where she lived a happy,care-free life, but when the war started she then understood the more important, deeper things. Through the story, she develops two important themes, to keep the faith and never give up and that you don’t know what you have until you lose it.…
This was one thing my dad and I agreed on. The music was period accurate, which made it even better. “Should I stay or Should I Go” by The Clash was a song that played though out the series and represents two of the characters relationship. The two characters are brothers'. The older brother, Johnathan shows Will, his little brother, the song. Will is kidnapped in the series and sings the song to himself to comfort himself. Other songs in the show were “Sun Glasses at Night” by Corey Hart, “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane, and “Can't Seem to Make You Mine” by The Seeds. These are all songs that would have been out around 1983. I was very impressed with the music choices in the show. I think the show was really enhanced by the…
