Abusing Power in The Tempest
William Shakespeare uses many different elements in The Tempest to convey his different views on things. For example, he uses gender roles to show class division. He also explores the topics of love and how that has an effect on people, and how the environment can change the way people act. All of these concepts are necessary to understand, but they are only part of the big picture. In order to fully understand Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the reader needs the presence of power among people and also within themselves. Without the element of power, none of the other elements matter. In The Tempest, William Shakespeare dramatizes the exercise of power and conveys his ideas on the responsibilities of power through the characters and the relationships between them.
One way Shakespeare shows the exercise of power in The Tempest is through titles of the different characters. Prospero is the main example of this. He is very powerful as the Duke of Milan, but his books about the liberal arts are more important to him than his Dukedom. After being usurped and sent off the island, he declares himself the leader of the island he lands on due to the power of his books, even though Caliban settled on the island before Prospero. The power of this title Prospero gave himself is enough to make Caliban his slave of the island, as well as Ariel. Prospero rules over these two, and has them do whatever he wants them to via the power of these books, and “Among those books was one about an art, not usually numbered among the liberal arts—an art, which, as Caliban says: ‘is of such power, It would control my dam 's god Setebos And make a vassal of him’ ”(Connor). Shakespeare may have represented this forced power role as an allusion to the exploration of the New World during the 16th century, and his thoughts on the expedition.

    In order to understand the characters in a play, we have to be able to distinguish what exactly makes them different. In the case of The Tempest, Caliban, the sub-human slave is governed largely by his senses, making him the animal that he is portrayed to be and Prospero is governed by sound mind, making him human. Caliban responds to nature as his instinct is to follow it. Prospero, on the other hand, follows the art of justifiable rule. Even though it is easy to start assessing The Tempest in view of a colonialist gaze, I have chosen instead to concentrate on viewing Caliban as the monster he is portrayed to be, due to other characters that are not human, but are treated in a more humane fashion than Caliban. Before we meet Caliban, we meet Ariel, Prospero’s trusting spirit. Even though Ariel is not human either, he is treated kindly and lovingly by his master who calls him “my quaint Ariel.” Caliban, on the other hand, is called a “tortoise” and a “poisonous slave” by Prospero. As Caliban enters in Act 1 Scene 2, we realise his fury at both Prospero and Miranda. He is rude and insulting and Prospero replies with threats of torture. Prospero justifies his punishment of Caliban by his anger at the attempted rape of his daughter, something Caliban shows no remorse for. Miranda distinguishes herself from Caliban by calling him “a thing most brutish” and inadvertently, a thing that has only bad natures. She calls his speech “gabble,” but doesn’t stop to wonder whether it was she that didn’t understand him because she didn’t know how to speak his language. Surely Caliban communicated verbally with his mother for the twelve years before Prospero killed her? It seems that Prospero and Miranda expect Caliban to be grateful for the knowledge of their language, but Caliban has just learned “how to curse” and justifies his anger by claiming rights…

    In many of the plays by William Shakespeare, the central character goes through internal and external changes that ultimately shake their foundations to the core. Numerous theories have been put forth to explain the sequence of tragedies Shakespeare wrote during this period by linking it to some experience of melancholy, anger, despair, and the antagonist 's ultimate fall from grace in their lust for power. But such theories overlook the fact that it is in this very same period and in the same tragic works that portray the heights to which human nature can rise and fall in its purest and noblest, if not happiest terms. Surely the creation of so much light alongside the darkness and the perfection of the artistic medium through which Shakespeare gives them expression argues against the idea that the greedy side of human nature is his chief concern. His efforts to portray human life in its rarest form and not only the dark depths, but also the treasure rooms of our being. He tries to pierce beneath the superficial motives and forces of surface behavior, social, and cultural expressions and to the deeper levels of individual character and human nature. Shakespeare then places these aspects of human existence in their true relation to the wider field of universal life. In relation to the tragic hero, there are many similarities between the tragic heroes in Macbeth and King Lear. However, the differences between the two outline the re-occurring themes in both plays. In Shakespeare 's plays the central characters ' own weaknesses and lust for power lead to corruption. The unchecked power in Shakespeare 's Macbeth and King Lear ultimately leads to corruption, tragedy, and the hero 's fall from grace.…

In the play, Propsero, once the Duke of Milan, resides on a remote island in the Caribbean with his daughter Miranda where he has spent many years ever since his brother Antonio dethroned him.     Shakespeare reveals without the presence of authority, humanity succumbs to chaos. In the opening, King Lear’s authority is immediately established with the use of the imperatives, “attend”, “give, “tell” and “speak”. This affirms King Lear as a powerful figure of authority through his command of language. Upon his relinquishing of power to his daughters the ‘storm and tempest’ begins on stage.     Throughout William Shakespeare's play, The Tempest, many different themes and motifs are present. However, power and gender roles strongly influence the directionality of the plot. Specifically, the characters Prospero and Sycorax tend to represent two opposing ideas of what it means to be male versus a female and to have power versus not having power. The patriarchy is one that seems to be led and determined largely by Prospero, however, is a coherent system which is opposite of the system Sycorax represents.
