British historian Lord Action said “power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely” (Henderson, D., 2013). Simply put this statement states that all great men are corrupted. However, this is not a belief of this writer. There are many great men, who were indeed great men. Thus, leaders should try to increase their power, as doing so will likely make them more efficient leaders of more empowered groups.
Countless people believe that power corrupts. Many times this belief comes from the numerous stories of powerful men behaving badly. Several of these stories are of those in power being unfaithful

Being empowered increases the individuals sense of power and in some cases, one study showed that those who felt empowered were better workers who had fewer errors while on the job (Pickert, K., 2008). However, the question is; does power corrupt all leaders, or is it that leaders often have to make choices, which seem corrupted, in the best interest of society as a whole? President Lincoln was a prime example of this.
President Lincoln was born in 1809 to poor parents, married in 1842, and had four sons, all of whom all passed away at an early age, but one (WhiteHouse.gov., n.d). He fought strong and hard in the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, wrote the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation, he preserved and saved the Union. While some people thought some of Lincoln’s tactics were corrupt, he made those decisions in order to preserve our Nation, and Lincoln needed to make those

This writer does not feel power corrupts. Leaders, as well as group members, should have empowerment. Empowerment makes one fit for a job and make fewer mistakes. Being empowered does not mean that a person will not make mistakes, even at times have to go back on their word. Being empowered means to have enough confidence in oneself to do the job, to do that job fairly, and to the best of that individual’s ability. Being corrupted does not mean making less popular decisions, it simply means keeping the individuals or the group’s best interest at heart. At times, this means making decisions an individual would say he would never

Many people in today’s world would do just about anything to rise to power. Weather it’s doing drugs,or sabotaging and trying to make people think you’re the good guy. Other people use their power for their own selfish gain and in turn they think they can do just about anything they want. People like this are corrupted in their own twisted way and they can corrupt the people around them. Corruption in it’s highest form is dishonest and sometimes people don’t understand why they do what they do in the first place. There are many public figures that we know pretty well, we know that many of them have done things to boost their power and reputations. One person thought their status meant a free pass, that was Anthony David Weiner. He thought he could get away with a scandal but that wasn’t the case. It caused him to lose the job he had. How far will people go before letting the power go to their heads?…

Corruption is common, and is found in several forms. But the root of the problem comes from powerlessness, not power. Power is just an ability while powerlessness it a feeling. Feelings stay longer than a term, event or treatment. Therefor, powerlessness is a force that lingers within a person or place for years to come. What corrupts absolute is not power, but the initial lack…

    Role Of Greed In Macbeth

“Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed” (Mwai Kibaki). This quote, from the former president of Kenya, ties in perfectly with Macbeth’s thirst for power. In William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, Macbeth murders King Duncan, knowing that he would become king when Duncan died instead of waiting to see if the prophecy would come true without forcing it. Greed holds the most power in influencing the actions of others.…

They say this looking at the book and seeing big brother being the only corrupt official. This makes sense on their perspective because my claim is power can corrupt but in the story there's only one corrupt man. The only problem with this is that he isn’t the only one. Sure Big Brother is the only corrupt person alive, but there have been more before Big Brother, like the rule of the corrupt men and even a woman in the government, meaning that the story has more examples of corrupt leaders than just big brother. And they were there before Big Brother and his rule. Although you can make a strong argument with what is given in the text my claim would prove to be more generous when it comes to evidence and ways to explain it.So the claim power can corrupt still stands with the opposing claim power is used effectively being just not as…

Authoritative leadership can be faulty because fear and power out rule respect and decency towards the leader. In Macbeth, it is explained how it is safer to be feared than loved. This quote is stating how for a leader’s sanity, they should be feared by the people to be a better leader, than to be loved. Being feared is faulty because if a serious situation comes up, the people will be feared of the ruler and may not follow what he is saying. A leader should be loved for his people to listen to him. In the same way, Machiavelli shows how a leader can be hated by this quote, “Nevertheless a prince ought to inspire fear in such a way that, if he does not win love, he avoids hatred; because he can endure very well being feared whilst he is not hated…” This quote summarizes how a leader can be feared so much that he is hated. It creates an unbalanced society if a ruler is feared so much that they are hated. How will his people feel safe if he is nothing but feared? Authoritative leadership can become out of hand when the leader's power becomes overpowered. Clearly, authoritative leadership can be faulty due to their lack of respect and…

The accountability of a leader is felt during the most challenging times of his governance. In a normal setting, the many reprobate violations perpetrated by leaders are enough to remove a person from office. In a political environment however, the situation is not so simple. The arduous process of impeaching a public official accused of crimes has not avoided the upper echelons of power as even presidents are culpable to impeachment. Presidents Clinton and Johnson withstood the worst of legislative action by being successfully inculpated only to be acquitted by the Senate. It is also worth noting that President Nixon also faced the wrath of the legislature, choosing to resign in the wake of the Watergate scandal subtly.…

An example of "absolute power" corruption is one of the most famous events in history. Adolf Hitler had power over Germany. Some people say he could have been a great leader. How Does Power Corrupt

Power and even absolute power has the ability to corrupt. Many people think that but to me, that’s not the case. Power does not corrupt because if it did, all of history’s leaders would have plunged the world into darkness and chaos. Leaders like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr. are some examples of good leaders who used their power for the benefit of the people. Power doesn’t corrupt; it shows the corruption in…

Powerful people surround us every day. People who have may have more money than us, people that have more knowledge or people who simply just have more power. Since there are so many people like this around us, we often believe that since they consume so much power, that it is impossible for us to have any. However, anyone can be powerful. Alice walker said, “The most common way people give up their power, is by thinking they don’t have any,” which is exactly true. Anyone can have power, people who believe they can will, and people who believe they can’t have power, won’t…

Strong leadership, no matter how well intentioned and benevolent, can foster dependency and subvert democracy. Yet absence of any leadership will lead to confusion, drift, and tension. As many progressive activists have remarked, there can be a "tyranny of structurelessness" as well as of autocracy.…
