The destruction of slavery and the continuation of one nation was extremely important to Abraham Lincoln. When he learned about the possible expansion of slavery to the Midwest, Lincoln was enraged and schedule public speeches in response. It was there were he spoke about his opposition to slavery. As Lincoln is quoted saying the book, The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery by Eric Foner, "I am naturally anti-slavery. If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong. I can not remember when I did not so think, and feel." Lincoln always supported liberty and equality as visible in his term as President of the United States. It was him placing so much importance on liberty and equality that lead to him passionately pursuing the destruction of slavery while trying to maintain this nation unified through The Emancipation Proclamation.

The Emancipation Proclamation is the document that stated the freedom of the slaves. In this document it states that anyone who still holds a slave will be in rebellion.
