Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln, america's greatest president, his legacy will never be forgotten. Abraham lincoln became president during the breaking point of our country making it even more challenging, as he had just became president a few days before. The union (the north) did the right thing by going to war with the confederates. It helped save our country to what it is today. On February 12, 1809 Abraham was born in a one room log cabin the floor as earth and their one bed made out of hay. By the age of eight Abraham already knew how to swing an axe. Abe and his father cut trees to clear the farmland while his sister sarah and his mother cooked and cleaned the house. Abe did go to school making a four mile hike there and back. He

His gamble to avoid opinions and policies worked, and he won the election.” (Abraham Lincoln-Gale) As Abraham became the 16th president of America many of the southerners did not like their new president so they started to succeed from the nation calling themselves the Confederate States of America. Abraham had a big mess on his hands after only being in office for a few days. Southerners knew he wanted to end slavery and they thought it should be up to the states to decide about slavery and not the government. This is the main reason for the starting of the civil war. Slavery was a hard topic to handle but Abraham handled the situation just right. While Lincoln was campaigning he went around warning people that slavery was not going to stop until a crisis had been passed that made all territories and states to get rid of slaves or the ultimate extinction of slaves. (Lincoln and Douglas debates) Lincoln once said that “a house divided against itself cannot stand” in this quote he is referring to our country and if our country is divided our country cannot stand strong and
