Abortion should remain legal

Abortion should remain legal
The issue of abortion has been a very important, controversial, and arguable issue. There are a multitude of reasons of why abortion should be legal. It should always remain a woman's choice because it is a woman`s body, therefore women should be able to make the option when it comes down to abortion. A woman may choose to have an abortion due to a medical condition or unplanned pregnancy. If a woman is raped, it is most likely she does not want to carry the child of a rapist and raise the baby on her own. If a young woman is not mentally or financially prepared to have a child, but accidentally gets pregnant, legalized abortion allows the young woman to have a right to choose to not bring a baby into a life of despair. It should not be up to the government to decide if abortions should be illegal. A woman has control over her own body. She can choose to do what she wants with it. Just like abortions, tattoos can also cause life threatening infections. If a person decides to get a tattoo, should the government also decide if this should or should not be legal? The legality of abortion is one of the main determinants of its safety. Prohibiting abortions will not stop abortions; women would simply seek abortions via illegal means. Before abortions were made legal, women were performing their own abortions or going to anyone that would perform the abortion for them. An abortion is a procedure that needs skills and equipment to be done safely. In most cases, people, who did abortions illegally, did not have proper medical training or access to proper facilities. It has lead to severe complications, such as incomplete abortion, sepsis, hemorrhage, and the damage of internal organs. Using dangerous and unsanitary instruments was another reason to the occurrence of severe consequences after the induced abortion. Lots of women have died during surgery, because of infection. Also if abortion was not carried out correctly the child could survive but be left with serious birth defects. Unsafe abortions are a major cause of injury and death among women worldwide. In some countries for example Iran, intentional abortion, except for some special cases, is illegal because of social and religious beliefs. Although data are imprecise, it is estimated that approximately 20 million unsafe abortions are performed annually (“The Consequences of Unsafe Abortion”, Shirin Shahbazi, 2009). Lots of women have to do abortion because of health condition. Because they have heart or blood vessels diseases they can die during giving birth to baby. Some of them decide to leave a baby and to carry on pregnancy. Sometimes the result can be successful, but in most cases both woman and baby die. The main point of making abortion illegal is to prevent deaths, but will it work in such situation? It will kill even two people. The baby may also have health problems which would make carrying on the pregnancy highly unethical as they may suffer as a result of being born. If there is a problem with the child such as a severe disability, for example Down syndrome, then having that baby may be traumatic both for the parents and for the child. Down syndrome is a condition in which extra genetic material causes delays in the way a child develops, both mentally and physically. It affects about 1 in every 800 babies born in the United States. 90 % of women who receive a positive diagnosis of Down syndrome choose to have an abortion (“Prenatal Testing Puts Down Syndrome in Hard Focus”, Amy Harmon, 2008). If abortion was illegal and all of the women had to give birth to children with Down syndrome, it would potentially mean they allowed their children to suffer, because children’ health condition would affect their quality of life or leave them in a great deal of pain. Unexpected pregnancies often come at a time when a woman is not ready emotionally or financially to become a parent. In lots of cases the man is not ready to have a baby either. Raising a child is a huge financial responsibility and should not be taken lightly. That means the parents may have to reevaluate their spending habits to provide for their child. That child's needs should come before the parent's wants. Besides the finances, the child needs to feel love everyday from the parents. If children are not wanted they may be neglected by their parents. When pregnancy results from partners that are not attached to each other emotionally, it would not be a good idea for them to bring a life in this world. This is true especially if two people cannot get along, because that child will connect them to each other for the rest of their lives. The possible constant conflict and tension between the parents would have a negative effect on the child. When two people that cannot get along have an unexpected pregnancy, abortion is the intelligent choice. World’s top problem is overpopulation. Overpopulation has become a major challenge and concern for countries around the world. It is estimated that there are 43 million abortions a year. Imagine that those abortions had not occurred with the current population issue in the world. The world is already overpopulated and as a planet we don't have enough resources for everyone and without abortion we would have a significant problem with overpopulation, which affects the economy. So in this way abortion is beneficial to the planet. It is clear abortion should remain legal; even if it seems immoral, it can often be the best situation for the people that have to make that tough decision. In conclusion, keeping abortion legal will prevent lots of deaths, keep some of children from growing up financially and emotionally deprived and help keep two people apart that should not be together in the first place. United States is a country based on freedoms, and women have and should continue to have the freedom of that choice.
