1. Describe (in your own words) why “compulsive gamblers” and “compulsive eaters” are not considered compulsive according to the definition of DSM-IV. Illustrate with an example.

Compulsive eaters, and compulsive gamblers are not considered compulsive because they seek eating or gambling as way to fulfill their need for it. A person with OCD do the things they do because they feel they have to, and wouldn’t do these things if they didn’t have to. A person may be a compulsive eater because they get stressed or mad and their way of relieving the stress or anger is to eat.

2. Identify sex differences in the rate of the five types of anxiety disorders.

Phobias -In the first type of anxiety disorder, specific phobias, women are twice as susceptible to have a phobia than men, in the case of social phobias, women are more likely to have a social anxiety disorder than men, but men are more likely to seek treatment. Generalized anxiety disorder, is twice as common in women than it is in men. Group who are at risk are people who are separated, divorced, homosexuals, unemployed and housewives. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, men and women are equally at risk to develop OCD. PTSD, or Posttraumatic stress disorder, women are twice as likely to develop PTSD than men, but this depends on the type of trauma that has occurred. UP to 65% of female victims of sexual assault develop PTSD Panic Disorder- Women have higher rates to have a phobia than men in all countries.
