Sympathizing with Abner While reading this story you learn about a character named Abner Snopes. Abner Snopes is the father in this story and also the main character. Abner Snopes is not a model husband, parent, or individual. Abner wanted more than what he had, and wanted to do more than what he was able.. His jealousy of the De Spain house and what it represented to him does not excuse his defiling of the rug in part of the story, but it does explain the logical and emotional processes while doing do.
