Abigail's Lies In The Crucible
Rough Draft The Crucible was written by Arthur Miller, it was published January 22nd 1953. The play took place during 1692 to 1693 in Salem Massachusetts. For the most part of this play it was all based on lies, you had people accusing others to keep themselves out of trouble and everyone would believe them. Other than John Proctor who knew what was happening but he couldn't convince the others to believe him. So whoever Abigail or one of the girls would accuse they would either confess something that wasn't true or they would be hung. The entire town of Salem was blinded by the truth and believed anything Abigail and the other girls would say. All the girls acted as if the devil was around during court to get the people they claim contacting the devil to be hung. Throughout this play people were blinded from the truth they believed anything the girls would say and didn't question them.“When one rises above the individual villainy displayed, one can only pity them all, just as we shall be pitied someday” (Miller 137). To me I feel as if this quote talks about Abigail. The quote talks about one individual rising and starting something which she had done. “She sends her spirit on me in church; she makes me laugh at prayer” (Miller 920-921)! Abigail had said this to prove she never called the devil and that Tituba did. This is what she was saying about Tituba trying to get her hung instead of herself. She had to come up with lies to get others in trouble other than her and the other girls who were with her during the singing and dancing. Abigail had twisted the justice in salem after that innocent people were being accused and they didn't even know why. Just after telling the court that what the girls were doing was pretend, she joins the girls in accusing people of witchcraft once again.     The Crucible was written by Arthur Miller who was born on 17th October 1915 in New York City. The Crucible is based on a small group of teen girls in 1692 Salem, Massachusetts caught in an innocent conjuring of love potions to catch young men who are forced to tell lies that Satan had invaded them and forced them to participate in the rites and are then forced to name those involved. Thrown into the mix are greedy preachers and other major landowners trying to steal others' land and one young woman Abigail infatuated with a married man John Proctor and was determined to get rid of his innocent wife Elizabeth. Arthur Miller wrote the events and the consequent trials where those who demanded their innocence were executed, those who would not name names were incarcerated and tortured, and those who admitted their guilt were immediately freed. In Act 3 of The Crucible the Trial scene is set in the Salem meeting house, this scene is so important because it is the most intense scene in the play because everything is revealed, and timing proves to be one of the most important factors. Proctor realizes that it is critical for Mary Warren to testify against Abigail before she loses her courage to do so.     We are warned about Abigail before she even utters a word, Miller gives us a quick overview of her personality ‘Abigail seventeen enters- a strikingly beautiful girl, an orphan, with an endless capacity for dissembling.’ We see that before we even get to know Abigail we are told that she is very good a telling lies. But at the start Abigail does try to start off telling the truth when she does tell her uncle about the dancing and she pleads with him that young Betty is not witched. However, we do see the dark side of Abigail, when she is talking to all the girls saying that they only danced and Tituba conjured spirits not them and if they told Abigail would ‘come to [them] in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. I saw Indians smash my dear parents’ heads on the pillow next to mine, and I have seen some reddish work done at night, and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!’ We can see the extremes Abigail would go to keep this a secret. We know that Abigail is just plain bad, there isn’t a lot of good in her at all.     Throughout act one of The Crucible, Arthur Miller uses many forms of characterization to present Abigail as a sly, lying girl, who tries to wheedle her way into getting the outcome that she wants by any means necessary. One way he does this is through Abigail’s words throughout act one. When Parris is asking Abigail about why she was fired from Elizabeth Proctor’s service Abigail said, “[she] hates me, uncle, she must… [she is] a bitter woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman, and I will not work for such a woman!” (Miller 12). The way that Abigail had blamed getting fired on Elizabeth Proctor being a terrible person shows that she will lie to not be punished and soil Elizabeth Proctor’s name. Miller’s choice to have Abigail say all of those things instead of just telling the audience that Abigail lies a lot is a lot more effective in making an impression on the audience’s mind because it forces the audience to form the opinion themselves. Another way that Miller shows Abigail’s evil intents is through her actions. Betty wakes up for only a moment to tell everyone that Abigail “drank a charm to kill [Elizabeth] Proctor” (Miller 19). Abigail’s actions, told to us by the seemingly bewitched Betty, to what extent she will go to get what she wants. Although Miller could have just stated that Abigail had been out drinking blood and charms to kill Goody Proctor, he had Betty wake up and start screaming out what had happened. This brings a lot more tension into the storyline and cast a greater impression on the reader. The final way that Miller shows the reader Abigail’s ill intentions is through what other characters say to and about her. When Abigail is with John Proctor he says to her, “Ah you are wicked yet… You’ll be clapped in the stocks before you’re twenty” (Miller 22).     Abigail Williams is introduced as an extremely beautiful girl with an ability to disguise her emotions and she uses this pretence to manipulate the various members of the community like Reverend Parris and Mary Warren. Abigail is introduced as having “endless capacity for dissembling. Now she is all worry, apprehension and propriety” (Miller, I.30-31). Her “capacity of dissembling” indicates that she often conceals herself behind a false mask, hiding her true intentions. When the author uses the word “Now” he indicates that at this moment she is feeling “worry, apprehension and propriety” but it could change later on. Her ability to change her emotions shows that she can put with up false pretences in order to stop the person from reading her and understanding her true intentions. Abigail pretends as though a spirit has come on her when “[she] is looking about in the air, clasping her arms as though cold” (III.802-803). Other girls follow her charade. They all blame Mary Warren for this ‘witchery’ who is “terrified, pleading”. Mary soon realizes that she cannot win and claims “[Proctor is] the Devil’s man” (III.108-109). Abigail’s manipulation of the girls deceives the court by shifting the blame away from her and towards Mary Warren. Abigail’s false charade shows that she holds enough power to make others follow her in her dishonesty, even if it is considered a “sin”.
