    Mohandas Karamchand Ghandi, known as Mahatma , or ‘Great Soul’ was a successful leader who managed to cause major political change in countries that experienced an abundance of racial discrimination and cultural inferiority .The two most significantly effected countries that experienced direct positive empowerment because of Mahatma Ghandi were South Africa and India. Reason for Ghandi’s immense success with each goal he set was his strong self belief, resilience, persistence and determination. In South Africa Mahatma Ghandi fought for Indian civil rights, his success resulted in the reformation of the anti- Indian Legislation, by South African Officials. Throughout the history of South Africa racial discrimination was always prevalent among society. Native Africans, Indians and Asians were constantly subject to racial injustices, particularly from the 1800’s to 1959. Examples of this are evident throughout the legislations and laws that were directed at Indians; Indians; -Could only freely migrate to South Africa as indentured Labourers (labourers on contract) - They had none of the rights of full citizenship - Were not allowed to own property or land - Were only granted temporary residence -Forced to pay of sum of £3 if they were ex-indentured Indians that failed to reindenture or chose to return to India after their labour contracts were completed . - Had to live in government allocated areas for ‘sanitation’ purposes - Were the only race that had to complete a educational, health, age and means test in order to gain admission into the country with the exclusion of Indian indentured labourers. (this purpose of this test was to stop further immigration of ‘free Indians’ (Indians that came to South Africa not indentured)…

    One of India's most important men in history was Mahatma Gandhi. In this interpretation I wish to discuss Mahatma Gandhi's writing's on India's Independence. As discussed in "Indian Home Rule" written in 1909. Born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi but known as Mahatma Gandhi lived from the year 1869 to the year 1948. He was the primary leader for India's independence and one of the most successful users of civil disobedience in history. He was a spiritual and political leader in India, and he used his position and voice to make his country better. Mahatma Gandhi believed in satyagraha or " resistance through mass non-violent civil disobedience.     I am purely amazed by the astonishing personal revolution by which a simple inarticulate man transformed himself into the Mahatma, who ushered the British Empire out of India without even firing a shot. In the age of Empire and Military might he proved that the powerless had power and that force of arms would never prevail against force of spirit. Based on all this, Mahatma Gandhi surely deserved an award, which spoke of his efforts, his fight for freedom and justice and all his other contributions to this world. This award could be given to a few other people also who have been great reformers. It could be given to one who is a reformer, who has fought for the rights of the people, one who has fought against all the injustice, malpractices of this world, for the oppressed people. One who does not use his status, power and military to reform the world but his own might and that force of spirit to make this place a better world. One who displays the courage and conviction to stand for his beliefs. In short, he/she could be called the guiding light for peace in this world. Gandhi's concept of nonviolent resistance liberated one nation and sped the end of colonial empires around the world. His marches and fasts fired the imagination of oppressed people everywhere. Millions sought freedom and justice under Mahatma's guiding light. He proclaimed the power of love, peace and freedom. He fought for the rights of the Indians, for their freedom from the British. His principles surely made a difference in this world. In spite of being treated rudely and paying all sorts of penalties, he was never deterred. Many people, organizations and awards have already acknowledged Gandhi for his efforts. Recently he was rated the runner up Person of the Century second only to the great scientist Albert Einstein who had himself said that " the future generations will scarcely believe that such a man in flesh and blood, had tread this earth."…

    “Whenever I despair, I remember that the way of truth and love has always won. There may be tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they may seem invincible, but in the end, they always fail. Think of it: always.” – Mohandas Gandhi. Aroused by the massacre of Amritsar in 1919, Gandhi put all his life’s effort into breaking free from the clutches of Great Britain. As the principal figure used his influential philosophy of non-violent confrontation, he inspired political activists with many persuasions throughout the whole world. Not only was Mohandas Gandhi a glorious diplomat, but also his effort to achieve liberty and equality for all people were greatly acknowledged. Gandhi’s alternative method of leadership gained him the love of a nation and eventually enabled him to lead the independence movement in India. Gandhi’s early life did not foreshadow his eventual role in reshaping India, and the world. He was born into a prosperous family on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, a seaside town between Bombay and Karachi (the region of Gujarat, a state today tragically torn by Hindu-Muslim conflict) (Deats, Jegen 17). His mother practiced Jainism, a Hindu-based religion which ideas of nonviolence and vegetarianism. Mohandas Gandhi has claimed that his mother was his biggest influence, whose life consisted of numerous fasts and vows. As a boy, Gandhi had his share of petty vices. He began to smoke when he was twelve, sometimes stealing money from the house to pay for cigarettes. He also started to eat meat—in secret of course, because all his family was strict vegetarians and eating meat was a regarded as a sin (Byrne pg. 11). Gandhi felt great regret for going behind his families back, and he vowed to himself that he would never touch meat or sin again.
