Abandoned

There I was, alone in the dark. Nothing but silence lingering through the air. I could hear the traffic from the freeway from afar. I looked down, and there she was, dead before my eyes. I could not believe I saw my mom, lying on the ground. I quickly reached into the back pocket of my ripped blue jeans to grab my phone. “So, we were doing this unit on human genetics, and we had to fill out this chart to figure out what color our kids eyes would be. I told her that’s not true because both my parents have blue eyes, and I have brown eyes. That can happen, right?”
“I don’t know, I guess it can.”
“That must happen because I am not adopted, right? I’m not, am I?”
A pause of mom’s silence made me think I was actually adopted.
“Mom, what’s going on?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean? It’s a simple f***ing question. All you have to tell me is I am not adopted.”
“This is not how I wanted this to come out,” she drawled, “I don’t know how to answer your

The next day, something even more shocking and kind of terrifying thing happened. And this happened with my music teacher, Mrs. Bailing. During music period, I usually go on my phone because I am a saxophone player, and saxophones don’t play a lot in band, so I usually go on my phone, and play games. Today, however, Mrs. Bailing caught me playing games on my phone during band. So she snatched my phone from my hand and looked through my Safari history, and all my private chats. I sat in my usual spot next to my best friend Daniel. He didn’t look up once. He couldn’t look at me. In that moment I well and truly knew it was my time. I glanced to the left backhand corner, where the first girl I’ve ever loved sat. Lucy Gerald was beautiful. She had bleach blonde hair and emerald green eyes, soft pale skin and rosy warm lips. Lips that I wanted to brush my lips against by the end of today. Today was my death day. And in that moment I pushed my chair backwards as I shot up quickly and started making my way out of this classroom.…
