A Worn Path Phoenix Bird Analysis
In Eudora Welty’s “A Worn Path” the character of Phoenix Jackson is symbolic of the bird from mythology because they both go on long journeys to rebirth, in Phoenix's case she is getting medicine for her grandson. Both Phoenix Jackson and the phoenix bird share similarities between each other, like the bird they have both made this journey multiple times and know the path very well. The bird goes to his birth city to die and be reborn. Phoenix Jackson goes to the town of Natchez to get medicine for her grandson who is dying. That's how her and the bird are similar in that aspect.

    Eudora Welty's short story "A Worn Path" takes place on an early December morning which deals with a very elderly and frail black woman, Phoenix; and the hardships inherent in her life. Phoenix Jackson is the main character, she is characterized as a strong poor elderly woman because of her appearance, personality and determination. For example, the narrator states, that Phoenix wore “a dark striped dress reaching down to her shoe tops, and an equally long apron of bleached sugar sacks, with a full pocket: all neat and tidy, but every time she took a step she might have fallen over her shoelaces, which dragged from her unlaced shoes " (475). The dark striped dress and long apron made of sugar sacks symbolizes poverty because of her hardships in life; this is the type of clothing most Negro women slaves wore back in the slavery days. The darkness of her dress represents her state of depression. The stripes on her dress symbolizes the prison bars showing she was held captive as a slave for some time.…

    Eudora Welty's "A Worn Path" is a story rich in mythological tales and figures, the most prominent being the legend of the phoenix. There are several symbols and references made during the course of the story to the legend of the phoenix. The phoenix, or bennu, comes from Egyptian mythology. As with most myths, there are variations on the myth, but the most common representation of the phoenix is a large scarlet and gold bird.     Phoenix Jackson was specifically chosen because of the literal meaning. The meaning of the name Phoenix is: A bird that built its own pyre and then was reborn from the ashes. The mystical bird itself, dies, and is reborn across cultures and throughout time. The words used to describe the bird are legendary, brilliantly colored, symbol of rebirth, and immortality which is seen to be illuminating the sky. The phoenix to build its own funeral pyre or nest, and ignites it with a single clap of its wings. After death, it rises gloriously from the ashes and flies away. The bird is said to symbolize renewal and resurrection, life in the heavenly paradise, Christ, Mary, virginity, the exceptional man. Early Christianity adopted the symbol due to its themes of death and resurrection’s, as an analogy of Christ’s death and three days later his resurrection. The earliest instance of the legend, the Egyptians told of the Bennu, a heroin bird that is part of their creation myth. The “solar bird” appears on ancient amulets and as a living symbol of the deity. Phoenix’s experiences on her journey or “path” is incredibly difficult, however, she fights with every footstep to push forward.
