A Tribute To Chet Baker
The concert I chose to attend was A Tribute to Chet Baker it was on Monday, March 20th and was at Webster University in the Winifred Moore Auditorium. The band was called Steve Schenkel Quartet. Steve Schenkel played the guitar, Jack Catalanotto was voice, Randall Holmes played the trumpet and flugelhorn and Ric Vice played bass. I think that Jazz players and singers have a very awesome talent. Most of the music was too slow for me, but I did enjoy listening to the improvisation that the musicians and singer did. My favorite was when Jack Catalanotto, the singer was doing his improvisation. It reminds me of someone who is beatboxing. This seems like it would be very difficult to randomly think of words and sounds to come up with. I also liked

    The concert that I chose to attend was the Gramophone award winners, Pavel Haas Quartet. Veronika Jaruskova, Marek Zxiebel, Pavel Nikl, and Peter Jarusek were the musicians.     On Friday, December 6th, I attended the Sac State Vocal Jazz Ensembles. The show began with special guests Christian Brothers Vocal Jazz. This young group of singers were extremely talented for their age. They held their harmonies and expressed their talents in each piece they performed. It was quite impressive and heartwarming because these students looked so into the music that it showed the passion they have for singing and vocal jazz. Following these talented young students, the Sac State Jazz Singers came on stage and did an excellent job at their pieces as well. I appreciated the song choices and arrangements for each piece. They definitely showed the hard work and practice they put into each piece and I overly enjoyed the show they put on.     Salsa Jazz Concert Report

    It’s not really the type of concert I would have typically gone to for fun but I did enjoy myself. I think the fact that it was salsa made it more interesting since I am Hispanic. I caught myself bobbing my head to the rhythm, clapping my hands, and tapping my foot in some of the performances. One of my friends was in the concert so it was nice to see him play on the drums and how he had a solo. Also another guy from my jazz class was in the concert and he played very well and it was riveting to see the way he played his solo on the sax. I don’t know if I would ever go to another jazz concert for fun but who knows maybe I would if it was a salsa one. I am glad that I got to go and see this because I probably would not have experienced this if it wasn’t because I had to. It did open up my eyes more to the world of jazz and seeing how different it is to see them playing live than from a computer or just listening to the songs. To see it all happening was fascinating.     On Sunday May 2, 2004 I attended a jazz concert with some classmates. The program was entitled Jazz at the Stockmarket. We kind of got lost on the way so we only saw the second half of the show. The Sacramento based musicians were Jim Malone on keyboard, Steve Krohn who played both the guitar and keyboard, Rich Defazio an amazing drummer. That night the band was featuring Ken Stout who is an incredible tenor saxophone player, and also a guest appearance vocalist by the name of Debbie Defazio. There was also a tremendous bass player but his name was not on the program. There was a count off and the music began with a jam-packed house. The first song was called Equinox by John Coltrane. I know I have heard this piece played before at one time or another. When the band played it they added a little taste of their own to it. The song was unique. Ken Stout played two remarkable solos; one in the beginning and on at the end. The Bass player was just fantastic; he flowed with everyone flawlessly in the first piece. The next two bits were written by Steve Krohn, which he dedicated to his three-year-old daughter. One was called Nicole's song. This part of a set was very diverse it included mixes of Christmas and cartoon songs, which blended together perfectly. The song started with a guitar then the saxophone and drums meshed in together. I really enjoyed this piece since it reminded me of the old cartoons I used to watch plus it just made you feel happy inside. I looked around and everybody in the building had a fat smile on his or her face. The next song was entitled Pleasing the Queen. It began with the drummer snapping on the symbols. This song was awesome because there was a total of six solos in the piece. There was some real talent in the band you could feel it in the air.…
