A Summary Of Zeds Dead's Social Identity
While many of their songs do not feature many lyrics and are mostly synthetic instrumentals, the lyrics that are included are extremely illustrative of Zeds Dead’s social identity. The self- determining lyrics of Zeds Dead tracks parallel Hooks and DC’s independent and easy-going personalities, as they are young and simply exploring the world and enjoying life. In one interview, when Hooks and DC were asked what their three favorite things about touring were, they replied with “Partying, finding cool new food spots, and exploring different cities” (Lex, “Interview with Zeds Dead”). Similarly, these social values are articulated in their song lyrics. For example, in their song “One Time”, which was performed at Fallapalooza at UMD, the lyrics

“What it’s Like” by Everlast is a song that tells not one but three different stories. It touches on homelessness, abortion and drug violence. Three very relevant topics, despite its 1998 release date. The song cautions those who are quick to judge and reminds us all, to take second look. The song also argues that the listener may one day find themselves in a similar situation and they may one day be the homeless person, the girl walking into the clinic or the family member of a drug dealer. Everlast does something very effective when making any argument; he puts a face to the issue he is discussing.…

This and the use of incorrect grammer, so common to rebellious teenagers, helps portray the message of the song, which is that today’s youth are prisoners of the older generations society, which alienate the younger generation and instead of looking for support and comfort, they thrive to rebel against these rules and law enforcement bodies, with the institution of society having no effect on the younger generation as they don’t comply and don’t want to reform. This creates the younger generations culture, arguing they are their own society.…

First, the fact that the main, bright vortex visuals were behind Hooks and DC demonstrated how they have created a separate stage identity through anonymity. Because the visuals were so bright behind them, the audience could only see the silhouettes of Hooks and DC. Even from the front row, I could barely tell what they were wearing. Additionally, they were on the top, back level of the stage, which was a sharp contrast from the preceding, more interactive DJs who were on the lower front level, closer to the audience. These visual elements separated them from the audience, providing them with a sort of “alter ego”. While they were not wearing masks or headgear like deadmau5 and Daft Punk do, the fact that they were distant and silhouetted equipped Zeds Dead with a stage identity. Even the names that they go by in interviews, Hooks and DC, are not even their real names. Therefore, the visual aspects of the performance also complemented the more anonymous stage identity of Zeds…

Before I start this analysis, I would like to point out that this interpretation of this song will be biased in two ways. I am a Christian and my interpretation will be based on my beliefs. My second bias is that I think that this band is one of the most lyrically powerful bands ever and is honestly probably my favorite band right now.…

Do monsters always come backs? Monsters seem to keep coming back for the same reason but in different forms. In Dawn of the Dead that form seems to be zombies. The term zombie is not used by the characters in the movie, but it is a term that has been picked for generations. Zombies or monsters same thing, they both have one goal is to attack, hurt, and kill. The monsters and zombies know who the enemies are and they won’t stop until they kill any and everything in sight.…

Indeed, it is almost hard to believe the opening line “I don’t eat no meat/ no dairy, no sweets/ only ripe vegetables, fresh fruit, and whole wheat” came from the same men who, only a few songs earlier, were threatening to throw Molotov cocktails at police. In reality, however, this song offers practical advice to those seeking to make positive change within their community. School reform, poverty, gang violence, and widespread incarceration represent systemic problems that can be overwhelming to any individual. “Be Healthy” provides a message of hope in the face of such widespread injustice by reaffirming Gil Scot Heron’s belief that change on the individual level is a prerequisite to revolutionary societal change. In “Happiness,” dead prez addresses the possibility of being overwhelmed by injustice more directly, explaining to listeners “I feel great/ even though we got mad things to deal with/ happiness is all in the mind/ let’s unwind and find a reason to smile/…

The song starts by basically talking about how America is now a nation where media controls the way people think, in which, Americans are subc being brainwashed. This so by providing hysterical information about the war as well as using propaganda. Although the writer believes that the media is nothing but a biased propaganda, he feels that it’s not only the media that is causing people to become brainwashed. He feels that it’s the people themselves that are the reason why we’re so easily convinced. We believe and rely on everything that the media says, which often causes people to become someone who they’re not. This is killing individuality in America. The writer views individuality as a positive thing, so he says, “We’re not the ones who’re meant to follow” in order to promote and embrace individuality.…

Often in rap music the artist is describing points of their life or childhood that were notable to them. One prominent rap song “Juicy”, by Notorious B.I.G. is “Biggie’s ode to growing up in the ghetto. Alternating between his impoverished childhood and life at the top of the charts, Big creates a rags-to-riches narrative exemplifying the American Dream lived through Hip Hop.” Another example is Tinie Tempah’s “Written in the stars”, which also references his life as an impoverished young boy living in the ghetto. The is is evident in lines such as “Look I'm just a writer from the ghetto like Malory Blackman. Where the hells all the sanity at, damn I used to be the kid that no one cared about. That's why you have to keep screaming 'til they hear you out”. There are an abundance of rap songs that delve deep into the origins of the writer, often of the hardships they faced due to poverty and bad influence in their youth. These include being exposed to gangs, and gang related violence as well as drugs and alcohol at a young age. These very real references to their youth are central illustrations of how music mirrors…
