A Soldiers Life Report
A Soldier's Life I have had the opportunity to follow around the Union army so that I could see how the men who are fighting for their country live and how their duration of their time in the army is spent and report back to you all about my experience. Throughout my investigation into the life of a U.S army soldier, I soon figured out how the soldier's daily life and the way they lived their life before the war drastically changed when they enlisted. The Union soldiers were so eager to fight for their country, they all then signed up to fight for the union. Also many were also drafted to fight. While talking to many soldiers of the division I was at most of them said that the biggest challenge for them was getting used to the demands of …show more content…
Many of these huts were pushed to their max capacity with all the soldiers being in this one small hut. With this many people in small rooms during the winter months, this lead to many people around me getting sick. This resulted in huge waves of people getting sick because of all of them living in such close quarters. The smell that were in these huts were also unbearable since it wasn't everyday each that the soldiers after a long, grueling hot day of drill came back to camp and took a bath and washed up, these men have told me they have gone months without them touching a bar of soap therefore making these divisions very weakening to the nose. Whenever winter came to and end the men resorted back to simple lean to shelters in fields. With all their training and drills taking up most of their time they still have some spare time to do their own things. Many of the men spent their time writing back to their loved ones and reading letters to keep them informed what their home lives are like. The men also loved to play games like card games or horseshoes.. I have even gotten myself caught up in a friendly game of horse shoe and a couple footraces during my

The first few days of the camp were an awkward and confusing time, prior to even mentioning the horrible conditions. The were to sleep in places called “huts” each of which were numbered and were crammed with bunks, and even more crammed with a stupid amount of people having to reside there. The “haftlinges” were given one ration of bread and watery soup per day (which is their only form of money). They were stripped naked and waiting for hours, waiting to shower and be shaved by one of the barbers. They took all of their clothes and belongings and gave them ratty pants, shirt, light jacket and beret; along with shoes with wooden soles that never fit right.…

In the beginning of the short story “Soldier Home,” by Ernest Hemingway, the main character, Harold Krebs is introduced as a young, religious, college frat boy who joins the Army along with some of his fellow peers. He spent 2 years in the Rhine and even took a photo with 2 unattractive German Ladies. When Krebs returns home to an almost unnatural world he feels unfit and unwelcome due to the lack of compassion and notoriety from his home town of Oklahoma. Hemingway says, this may be due to Krebs returning home “much too late” (187). “People seemed to think it was rather ridiculous for Krebs to be getting back so late, years after the war was over” (187). In my opinion, any normal person that experiences this lack of compassion and understanding for the sacrifices they made in war would feel a sense of rejection by the people. This type of rejection would cause any normal person to fall into a state of depression.…

I’m flesh.” (line 5) I am as strong as the granite I am viewing but I am still just a man; flesh, blood and bone. My wounds will weep even as I try to hold back my sorrow. The sharp replication of my soul is slanted between the dark evils of war and the light of today where I am still within the battle. I have two paths, two choices, stay with the darkness of the stone or turn away and free myself from the battle inside. It is up to me to act, to make the variance.…

World War I was the “war to end all wars”. It was the first global conflict and the first war to involve many modern technologies. In the conflict, the United States had over 300,000 casualties. The casualties were deaths or wounded. The wounds could have been something simple as a missing limb to as extreme as shell shocked. When soldiers were shell shocked they would often have no interest or a bad feeling about something they did while at war. In the short story, “A Soldier’s Home” by Ernest Hemingway, Krebs is a former college student and discharged soldier who is suffering from shell shock. Before the war, Krebs was going to college to become a minister. He enlisted in the Marines and was involved in some of the most bloody battles of…

When they return home from a combat deployment, many will struggle with readjusting back into “civilian life”. Most combat veterans will suffer from depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety. As a way of coping, many will use illegal drugs and alcohol as a form of coping with their problems. As a result, those who engage in illegal substances will automatically be given a Dishonorable Discharge, ending their military careers and forfeiting their Veteran Affairs (VA) benefits.…

The experiences that a soldier endures, regardless of which branch or war fought in, are traumatizing to say the least. Post-traumatic stress disorder has the potential to develop anywhere from minutes to years after a traumatizing event and negatively affects a person’s health, success, ability to socialize among other aspects of life. The disorder is characterized into three main symptoms: hyperarousal, intrusion, and constriction. In Ernest Hemingway’s short story, “A Soldier’s Home”, the main character Harold Krebs spent time as a young Marine in World War I and suffered constriction symptoms of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). While Krebs symptoms appeared much less severe than other reported cases in history, the disorder still affected his everyday life and his relationships with others. The debilitating effects of PTSD in soldiers are prevalent in Harold Krebs life as well as millions of other soldiers after returning from war.…
