A Short Story: Mckaylah's Mistakes
McKaylah Andreas looked out her window. She lived in a small house on the side of the vast Pacific ocean, but there was nothing special about that. The ocean was everywhere these days. Stupid earthquakes! She had never been particularly fond of the water, and found it funny how people paid so much for an oceanside view. She would pay anything to move away from the disaster that she had inadvertently caused. “McKaylah! Come downstairs for breakfast, the boat is going to be here to take you to school any minute,” called her mother. Another breakfast of fish and crabs. Due to the huge amount of water, the grocery store was destroyed and all food sources vanished. She wanted to hurry and take a shower, but the shower head had been broken for …show more content…
It would take ten minutes to get to by speedboat, not counting the stops at other houses. With the motor shouting in her ear, she glanced at the lifeless mountains that once stood tall over civilizations, now underwater. She sighed, hoisted her oxygen tank over her back, and walked up the crooked stairs.
After changing into her favorite wetsuit, the pink one with the flowers, she made her way onto the balcony railing. She jumped down with a splash, avoiding her dog’s underwater grave. Her name used to be Fluffy for her soft, white hair, but it’s more like Soggy now. The speedboat turned into the harbor and McKaylah clambered aboard. Once she was on the ship’s deck, she started to pull on the oxygen tank. During her ten minute ride, McKaylah mentally prepared herself for the day to come. Since talking was not an option underwater, she and the other children had been taught sign language. McKaylah, who had never been very adept at school, struggled with even basic greetings.
After difficulties through climate and economic studies and falling asleep in math, she had to deal with the guilt of causing it all… I broke California. I actually broke a state! Heh. Heh, heh. It’s kind of funny,

She hopped into the shower and knocked on the showerhead about thirty times until a peep of water came out. It landed on her already wet hair. She felt the spot on her head where the water droplets had hit and looked at her hand. “AAAAHH!!!” She found Fluffy’s fur on her hand. Fluffy’s tail was squished under the water pipe, causing the clog. “Oh Fluffy, I’m so so sorry.” McKaylah cried. “It was all my fault. I shouldn’t have gone to the mall. I should have listened to Mom and Dad when they said to watch you while they were running errands! If I had, you wouldn’t have dug out the house, it wouldn’t have fallen, the crack wouldn’t have opened, the water wouldn’t have washed us away from the mainland, and you wouldn’t be haunting me from the grave! It’s all my fault. The majority of the population had met the same demise and Fluffy, and those who had survived had to rebuild the world from scratch. She hadn’t intended to harm anyone, anything, or cause a massive flood, yet it seemed that life was always against her, before and after the huge earthquake that changed everyone’s lives

What about my two cats’? , she thought. “I’ll just leave them here”. “My cats are missing limbs and ears and they’re beaten up. If they weren’t in such poor condition, I would gladly them with me”.
