A Place Where The Sea Remembers Character Analysis

A reoccurring theme in A Place Where the Sea Remembers, is family and relationships. All relationships in the beginning if the book seem to be a bit rocky, but towards the end they all seem to pan out fairly nicely. Chayo and Marta are two characters that experience many hardships in their relationship, but end up overcoming it all in the end. Esperanza and Rafael also go through a lot in their relationship, but it ends with a beautiful marriage. Ceasar and Beto seem to have a very difficult relationship towards the beginning of the book as well, but they overcome that with ease. Chayo and Marta are sisters and practically all the family they have is each other. Throughout the book they experience one main point of conflict; this begins when Marta asks el Brujo to place a curse on Chayo's child. After this happens, Chayo ignores Marta and refuses to accept her as her sister because she feels betrayed by her. They don't speak to each other until the end of the book when Marta's child gets taken out to sea by a flood and does not return for years. Marta awaits by the sea for her son with Remedios and that is when Chayo apologizes and they begin to talk again. Esperanza and Rafael's relationship is a bit of a doozy. Beto seems to be very depressed when we first meet him in the book. He does not speak not does he eat or have a desire to have any kind of fun with his father. He feels responsible for the death of his mother and two younger brothers and so he does not allow himself to be happy. He feels as though he should have died with his mother and brothers. Once César reveals to him that he does not look at him as though he is a burden, Beto starts to open up a bit. All Beto needed was to hear his father say that he needs him and he is all he has.
