A & P And Kingfish Fancy Herring Snacks In Pure Sour Cream

John Updike’s A&P (pg. 429) is about a young man named Sammy who worked in a checkout at his local grocery store. Sammy is helping a customer when he notices a trio of girls enters the store with just bathing suits. One girl seems to stand out from the others (Queenie) because she is leading the pack. Queenie then buys “Kingfish Fancy Herring Snacks in Pure Sour Cream" (line 11) and goes into Sammy’s checkout line. Lengal, Sammy manager then comes in and confronts the girls for wearing nothing. Sammy try’s to defend the girl but does not succeed. He then quits his job to get the attention of the girls as they leave the store. He doesn’t think about things that will matter in 5 years, just worried about things that matter at a certain point in time. An example of that is when Sammy manager is trying to talk some sense into Sammy telling him that “you will get regret this” (21).
