In examining “An Education in Equality,” “Learning Begins at Home,” “A Military Education,” and Education on a whole, one thing is evident and a common denominator, that is, education is born at home. In fact, research has indicated that parental education is indeed an important and significant unique predictor of a child’s achievement. As a parent, having a college degree can almost guaranteed that the child will emulate that pattern. Most children have the desire to succeed in school especially with the impact of peer pressure and bribery from their parents. The parents of this young man were both college educated and had successful careers, thus desiring the same pinnacle for their son. As parents, we all want intelligent kids but caution should be taken so that the child is not overwhelmed and pushed to the edge. At Dalton the merit based recognized that even high academic achieving minority children have an assortment of cultural and non-academic hurdles to overcome and thrive in that environment. During this short film, the young student had the total support of his parents and structure within the family unit. His grandmother had even advised him on the potential encounter with racism and how to mitigate that action if it ever presented itself. Essentially, the advice gave him cognizance and an appreciation of the opportunities he had. He understood that status cannot compete with or deny the impact of racism. Ultimately, the video emphasized the importance of parents being at the fore-front of their children’s education. The love for the child was paramount and their urge to document this short film was
