A Midsummer's Night Dream Love Analysis
Shakespeare conveys his ridicule of love through various methods in A Midsummer’s Night Dream such as portraying love as a game through Helena and Demetrius’ one-sided love and incorporating a love potion which is bound to result in comedy. Usually when a confession of love is not reciprocated the person takes the hint, yet Helena struggles to understand that Demetrius, “in plainest truth”, tells her he does “not, nor [he] cannot, love” her and continues to express his annoyance (II.i.185-186). Demetrius’ blatant spurn of Helena’s continuous love is an attempt to terminate Helena’s stubborn love in a comedic way as she does not give up despite Demetrius’ crude remarks toward her.
