A Hero's Journey
|
It was the year 2201 AD. Gigantic preparations were in progress for the first manned expedition to Jupiter. A team of 150 astronauts had undergone rigorous training to travel in a spaceship called "Excalibur". They were instructed to fetch samples of all possible objects from Jupiter’s surface. The International Geologists Association were hopeful that they would find some metallic deposits in these objects and this would compensate for the diminishing quantity of metal available in the earth’s mines.

After the specified period, "Excalibur" safely landed on a plateau on Jupiter. Soon, the astronauts became engrossed in their work of gathering samples. Unfortunately, the region they had landed upon was a single continuous rock for several

Taking clue from the swaying of trees, Erick removed his astronaut’s suit, to discover that he could breathe. Incredibly but truly, the trio had landed upon what can be termed as – a second earth. All three danced like madmen, drank some water from a clear stream and ate some fruits. They roamed for about an hour and were horrified to see some skeletons, similar to those of human beings and other fauna found on our earth. They concluded that this earth was devoid of civilization, possibly due to an asteroid attack. It was also inferred that this asteroid attack annihilated living beings on this planet and this lead to an absence of control over the spaceship while it was stationed over Jupiter. They returned to the spaceship.

The sun was reddish orange on the horizon. The trio was carefully scrutinizing the different components of the spaceship searching for any hint that would prove useful. However, all efforts were becoming futile. Nelson was in the central compartment near the lever he had moved due to curiosity. The catastrophe he had initialized was unimaginable. Frustrated, he kicked the lever hard. This time it moved towards the right. Unbelievably, the door flipped once again but this time, to a relief, it closed shut and the spaceship began to move away from this

Sam is riding his bike into the oblivion. He’s surreptitiously trailing forward to the great unknown, wanting to pursue a passion that so evidently lacks support from his kith and kin. He seems unsure of this spontaneous flee; the way he dubiously glances over his shoulder, conveys his reluctance to overtake his concealed passions. The path he’s taking is coated with puddles and indents; this represents his journey in confessing his ambitions to himself and family. His journey was filled with damaging words of verbal abuse from those who loved him too much to let go, his parents; their best bet in holding their son back was to tear him down with deprecative untruths and “you’re not good enoughs.” He started to believe these things, but his ambition was too robust to mask. Sam headed for the road without a goodbye because that goodbye would have been the only truly effective way to dismantle his ambition. Sam keeps looking back to…

Creek. The door opened a crack, but there was an absence of people. "Hello?", I said. I tip toed into the main corridor and looked around. Nothing was out of place or missing, except for humans. I then tried all the neighbors on my street, and the next. At this point I was terrified, and did not think it could get any worse, but it did. All of a sudden, the same goo that I had seen in my room earlier, started falling out of the sky. It started off as a light drizzle, and turned into a massive pour. I looked up towards the sky just in time to see a giant spaceship landing a few hundred feet down the road. I paced back and forth, contemplating my next move. I chose to get a better look, and raced towards the mysterious object. Just as I arrived, the door on the space ship inched open. I stepped back to let whatever was in there out. "Greetings, fellow earthling", it said. "I have come to tell you that you are needed for a very important experiment." The green, one-eyed figure then stepped aside and pulled out one of my good friends from school, Tommy Davis. I gasped in horror. In a quick, and precise movement, they placed Tommy in a machine that made a disturbing sound. He was lifted off the ground, and his scream was…

The atmospheric entry probe Huygens became the first spacecraft to land on a body in the outer solar system when it landed on Saturn’s moon Titan on 14 January 2005. Titan, which was discovered by Christiaan Huygens in 1655 after whom the probe was named, is the only moon of Saturn that has an atmosphere. This atmosphere was found to be impenetrable by Voyager 2s imaging probes, and was believed to resemble Earth’s primeval atmosphere, making it a prime target for the European Space Agency’s (ESA) probe. Huygens’s objectives included studying the composition of Titan’s atmosphere and land; determining the existence of water bodies on Titan, including their size, composition, and properties; observing weather patterns on Titan; and search for…

From Andromeda, the galaxy looked like just another fuzzy point of light dotting the infinite void of the cosmos. As he approached close enough, he noticed its spiral shape with its arms of higher concentrations of stars. Located about two thirds out from the centre, in one of the spiral arms, was the small solar system that was his destination. Its young star had spawned ten planets and faithfully held them in perfect balance as it gave them its gravity, heat and light. In its life sphere, that is the sphere of space around itself where water existed as liquid, solid and gas, the young star had formed its life planet. Through it, he believed, the star expressed its consciousness and its spirit. How exquisitely beautiful the life planet appeared to him, floating out there with its dead moon for company. He thought that it looked almost like a carbon copy of his home planet, Rama. What a contrast it was to what he had just rendezvoused with on the way there. The fifty miles long, twenty miles wide boulder encrusted ice block he checked out on the way wasn’t streaming a comet tail yet, but it still looked menacing as hell. He knew that the tail would appear when it got close enough to the star; around about the orbit sphere of the sixth planet of the solar system he was visiting. As he approached the life planet, he admired its most striking feature, water. He flew towards the warmer, southern hemisphere where he saw a very large island surrounded by expansive oceans. He slowly began his descent through the atmosphere. On the spur of the moment he chose to aim his intergalactic cruiser towards the most easterly point on the east coast of the island, because…

Suddenly, a glistening flash emerged from the darkness as the ocean tossed Neptune’s Privateer atop the void. “What is happening?” I yelled “We are in The Bermuda Triangle!” said Kipling “Anything could become of us at this point, we may perish or find our way out through a miracle.” Forthwith the vessel sprouted through the raining sky and abruptly fell once more. I am not sure what became of us until the following morning as I awoke on dew dripped grass with specks of sand draped across from my torso to beneath my boots. “Aye, that was an addled idea on me part, forgive me lads.” said Hassett. The crew and I had awoken on the island in which we voyaged to, only it seemed more bizarre than before. “Let us all search this unfamiliar ground, split up in pairs of two.” said Hassett “Alton and I will go to the north, Leopold and Oran will travel to the west, Kipling and Blair will trek to the east, and Denver and John will go…

Throughout human history, great heroes have been created to triumph over man’s struggles. Most every culture has, in the past, told their own tales of heroes and their trials. These champions, while spread across our world and its ages, share some key characteristics with each other. This formulaic composition of heroes, while it can deviate, has stayed true since the dawn of history. This remains true with the Finnish hero god, Vainamoinen. (okay so his name has a bunch of umlauts and such but I can’t type that every time.)…

The departure stage is the first stage that starts the hero’s journey. The call to Adventure is the first part of the hero’s journey. (Campbell 41). The call to adventure is as it sounds the point where something happens that causes the hero to begin his or her quest, it’s the most pivotal moment that the hero has at the start of the journey. Wright has his call to adventure when he enrolls in the University of Wisconsin in the engineering program that they had. Wright ended up dropping out after a few semesters and at the time that he does, he moves to Chicago (Huxtable 41-42). He decided to make the move when he decided that the small town of Madison had nothing left to offer him. Upon making it to Chicago Wright wasted no time in finding a place to work. “He tried many places and kept getting rejected. Wright’s last stop was the firm of Joseph Lyman Silsbee” (Huxtable 46). Silsbee takes the place of mentor for Wright, it’s with him that Wright learns more on his talent and begins his career and legend. Wright leaves Silsbee and gets hired immediately by Adler and Sullivan as an assistant for Sullivan at this time Sullivan becomes the mentor teaching Wright more. Wright going through these parts of the hero’s quest puts him in the hero category. Even with the fact that it’s known he lied to lie his way into getting what he wanted.…

Joseph Campbell describes the 17 stages that occur during a hero’s journey, also known as Monomyth. The Odyssey by Homer is a story based on Ulysses and his journey, I will be describing the stages of Monomyth based on Campbell’s ideas. These stages will focus on Ulysses and his son Telemachus. According to Joseph Campbell, a hero’s journey normally entails three phases; the departure, the initiation, and the return. (Wikipedia)…
