A Hero In Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart
What characteristics describe heroes? How can one tell a hero apart from an ordinary person? My definition of a hero is a person who will achieve their goals, no matter how difficult their situations are. A hero also needs to be motivational, kind, courageous, and strong at heart. A hero will do everything possible to live up to their beliefs and do the moral thing. Now, a new question arises: Is Okonkwo, the main character in Chinua Achebe’s novel Things Fall Apart, a hero? Some might say that he’s a hero – after all, he is a powerful, prosperous, and well-respected man. Nevertheless, I believe that Okonkwo is not a hero; he doesn’t show the characteristics of being kind nor motivational. He doesn’t try his best to do the moral thing, and

what exactly is a hero? Who can be classified as heroic? From my perspective a hero is not only someone who wears a cape, has superhuman strength, wears fancy clothes or someone who saves his lady from the bad guy; however he is someone who stands for strength, bravery, humbleness, justice and equality. I believe a hero is someone who truly intends to make the world a better place for all people. He stands for what he believes in even though he may encounter danger and obstacle. We often watch movies with action heroes fighting for a good cause, but these heroes cause us ignore the real life heroes such as Cesar Chavez and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Cesar Chavez and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr are genuinely the definition of a hero.…

Unlike in Beowulf, they are generally low-key doctors who work to find the panacea for the world's ills, the politicians struggling for the rights of their people, the mothers who do anything to make the lives of their children better. All heroes have significant qualities. Many have the impression that heroes are people who have done something that is "cool" or singles them out. There are countless definitions of heroes, but most people's ideas about the characteristics of a hero are fairly consistent. It is important that a hero's cause is for the "good". A hero must be courageous and intrepid, meeting obstacles without fear. They have to be willing to fight with perseverance for their cause with determination and dedication. Another especially important quality is selflessness, to do it with unselfish concern for others, not for profit. Heroes must have conviction and focus in their purpose. Many accept that the willingness to sacrifice is perhaps the most important quality of a hero, the forfeiture of something highly valued for a cause. Once these guidelines are taken into consideration, many "heroes" are excluded, such as sporting greats, politicians and war…

What defines a hero? Does it mean having the ability to fly, super human strength, or be able to leap a sky scraper in a single bound? Maybe it’s the courage to run into a burning building and save someone’s life, or even answering the call to go fight for your country. However, according the Joseph Campbell, author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, it doesn’t require super human strength or the courage of a thousand lions; it requires one’s ability to embark and endure the three main stages of the hero’s journey paradigm: departure, initiation, and return. Within each of these three main stages, our adventurer will face multiple subcategories that will continue to physically and psychologically challenge the mind and body. In Dave Egger’s biography chronicling a New Orleans, Syrian-American named Zeitoun, finds himself very much intertwined amongst the inner workings of the Campbell’s portrayal of the hero’s journey. In addition to Egger’s biography, Mark Sundeen, author of: The Man Who Quit Money, also documents the tale of a man named Daniel Suelo who threw away his life savings and set off to live prosperously without money. Both men do not resemble the conventional representation of a hero, however according to Campbell, both Zeitoun and Suelo convey his theory of what it means to be a mythological hero.…

On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…

Maya Angelou, an author, poet, and a civil rights activist once said: “I think a hero is any person really intend on making this a better place for all people.” But seeing as this poet says “any person,” that person can be of human or even superhuman characteristics so long as their deed is right. In this case, in Robert Fagel’s translation of The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is a king longing to return home after numerous years of war. In Things Fall Apart, Achebe focuses on differences in culture and society. In the quote, "The world has no end, and what is good among one people is an abomination with others." Uchendu is discussing with Okonkwo and Obierka the massacre in Abame. I agree with the quotation. Many people have their own ways of doing things and then their actions are criticized by others. A prime example of this is religious groups in the world and all are criticized by one another at some point. A good example of that fueding is the on-going criticisms between Protestants and Catholics. Being Catholic myself, I can relate to this first-hand. Our beliefs to other religious groups are wrong, an abomination of what is "supposed to be done." We also sometimes criticize our brethren in other faiths. The world is always in a constant fight. There is a deeper meaning in this quote and that meaning is that internally, the world will never end its constant criticism and bludgeoning of itself. It keeps going around in circles, and until one group decides to understand the other, the cycle will continue. Basically, the beliefs misunderstood by stubborn people who do not want to understand are picked on. The people whose beliefs are in question get angry and these differences are set in motion. And truly, until we all understand each other, universally, this cycle of craziness will certainly never end, making Uchendu's statement…
