I have enclosed my resume. I am currently enrolled in City University of New York majoring in Education concentrated in Early Childhood. I have over 5 years of experience working in an educational environment with children between the ages 2 and 5. While in Middle School, I volunteered at an after work program tutoring my peers in key curriculum courses needed to pass State Testing. Once in high school I nurtured my passion for helping others strive to be the best. I was hired at Antioch Daycare Academy as a Part Time Instructor. As an instructor I was responsible for a class of 20 students between the ages of 2 and 4. I was required to complete a daily curriculum with my students that included the fundamentals needed in order to advance to Pre- K. I held monthly meetings with my student’s parents to discuss the growth, strengths and weakness of each student. My experiences in the classroom and work place have taught me how to effectively assess the short and long-term goals of children, and establish mutually agreed on methods to meet their needs. Throughout my years at Antioch, I was noticed and promoted to the positioned as Director’s Assistant, where I was able to strengthen my teaching and leadership abilities. I have shown to successfully work as part of an interdisciplinary team, collaborating with diverse professionals to provide a holistic approach to care. I have volunteered at daycare centers and outreach teen programs, emphasizing the importance of an education and the limitless opportunities it allows.…

SAMANTHA PIERCE 14 Brattle Street Cambridge, MA 02138 (617) 495-3108 spierce@jd13.law.harvard.edu December 1, 2010 Miriam A. Nunberg Staff Attorney U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights 32 Old Slip, 26th Fl. New York, NY 10005-2500 Dear Ms. Nunberg: I am a first-year student at Harvard Law School and am writing to apply for a volunteer summer internship with the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights in New York City. I learned about your organization through Harvard Law School's public service database and through Harvard students who have interned at branches of the OCR in other cities. Interning at the OCR would allow me to continue my commitment to civil rights in education, and I feel confident that I could contribute substantively to the work of your office while strengthening the skills I’ll need for a career in education law. As a senior at Cornell University, I wrote an honors thesis on the politics of bilingual education in California and New York, focusing on strategies for protecting minority students’ language rights. Because my career goal is to work on language issues, and discrimination generally, in American education, I wrote my master’s thesis on language policy in Spanish schools in order to gain knowledge of how other countries handle these complex issues. This semester, I’ve gotten involved with Harvard Law School’s Advocates for Education, as well as the Child and Youth Advocates, organizations which have exposed me to the work lawyers can do to promote education rights. Additionally, joining the Latino Law Review has kept me updated on the issues facing minority students. My work with the Harvard Defenders has begun to give me experience in public interest litigation, and working at the OCR would allow me to gain experience advocating for the specific client populations I hope to assist in my career. Because of my familiarity with language issues and New York’s bilingual education policies,…

For the past four years, I have been heavily involved in the cheerleading team. I have been a member of this squad since our very first practice in the cafeteria. This sport is my passion, and to prove it, I left my position on the volleyball team so that I could 100% dedicate myself to cheer. Dedication is important to me and I have never missed a practice without a doctor’s note. Since I have joined the team, I have not only grown as a skilled cheerleader, but as a person. It has improved my leadership skills and my social skills. I completely believe that I am the most qualified for the position of team captain, and I have many reasons why.…
