A Conversation With Vine Delori Video Analysis
For this assignment, I have chosen to write about Geraldine Keams. I first heard of Ms Keams on one of the first videos we referenced for this course. In the video A Conversation with Vine Deloria, Jr. Ms Keams was the primary interviewer of Vine Deloria, Jr. When watching the video I was upset of the condescending tone and activist mindset Mr. Deloria was portraying in front of the young impressionable students in the video. Out of curiosity, I researched the young students in the video to confirm that they too became activist or worse in order to disprove Mr. Deloria. What I found was the total opposite of what I expected. I was only able to find two of the three students, Steven Crum who is now a Professor of Native American Studies at UC Davis and Ms. Geraldine Keams who is storyteller, actress, and author who got her first acting break in The Outlaw Josey Wales starring Clint Eastwood.
As we have learned through this course, Native American people are known as the first people or the first nation as they have been documented the first to live in the America’s (North America, South America and Latin America). Our culture since its inception has had a

In this article, “1491”, Charles Mann introduces a very controversial topic about the pre-Columbus Americas. Before the year 1492, many different civilizations of Native American Indians inhabited the Americas. How many people actually lived in the Americas before the European invaders came in contact with the new world? For generations, historians and professors have been fascinated by this question and have always answered with conflicting conclusions. Also, how was the whole ethnic group almost eliminated from the earth in such a short amount of time? Although there are quite a few intriguing questions unanswered, the fact that the Native Americans were capable of surviving on their own and had a bigger impact on the new world than those from the old world is undisputed.…

Native American Indians have been living in America long before the white man ever came here. There were probably about 10 million Indians living in North America at the time the “white man” arrived. The first Native Americans were believed to have arrived during the last ice-age. Somewhere around 20,000-30,000 years ago and they came through a land-bridge across the Bering Sound, from northeastern Siberia into Alaska. The name “Indian” was given by Christopher Columbus who believed mistakenly that the mainland and islands of America were part of the Indies in Asia. Although, the ancient ways of the American Indian is lost, the religion, culture, legends and spirit will endure. The Native Americans were very spiritual and had many beliefs: the bald eagle is connected to many stories in their history. (Rice, 2008)…

What I have learned about American Indian Studies is that the amount of intelligence my ancestral forefathers’ had, has gone, and still goes unnoticed by the majority of the citizens of America. That American Indian History is a hush, hush subject of education that many times in my schooling, was overlooked. I was only taught about Natives when the history teacher was speaking of the ‘spectacular’ discovery by Christopher Columbus and that was it. I never knew that Indians across the nation suffer from similar health problems, including diabetes and high blood pressure or that Native Indians dietary habits changed dramatically because of the government issued food, which would cause many of these problems. Which leads up to my first theme of this essay; Native American Indian…

It is interesting to read first chapter of American History, about Native American People; West Africa & Europe in fifteenth century; and Spanish conquest of America’s greatest empire. I always wondered why Native Americans are called Indians. Now I know after reading this chapter that Columbus gave them the name ‘Indians’ as he mistakenly believed he sailed westward all the way to Asia. As the first Americans believed to have come from Asia, so unknowingly his theory was right too. This chapter focuses on Native American life and early exploration of America.…

Native Americans are a group of people with a variety of political structures and numerous ways of life. Most people envision Native Americans as uncivilized; however, this is often an overlooked topic and there are multiple pieces of evidence to prove they are civilized people. The Native Americans were civilized in many forms, they lived in harmony among nature until the white men kicked them off their land. The meaning of civilized is for a group of people to have well-organized laws and rules about how people behave with each other. Natives showed the organization of laws and rules when they “adapted to their new environmental conditions and natural surroundings, and eventually developed their own political systems, religious beliefs, and…

Situations where two or more people from different cultures have difficulties or hesitation in taking communications, are know as the “6 Stumbling Blocks”. As I watched the three videos, I realized that in all of them, there were at least one of the “6 Stumbling Blocks”, intercepting the communications made within two people from different cultures. Since it is hard to understand what the companion is thinking about. These stumbling blocks are indeed very cruel things. It can be a thing that triggers collapse among people’s relationship. Also, I really understand the feeling of misunderstanding the other’s thoughts, as I myself have actually lived abroad, where they have completely different cultures as the ones here in Japan. Therefore, I…
