In Katherine Dunn's Geek Love, the main characters are separated into two categories, the norms and the freaks. The narrative creates a world where all the freakish things are defined as normal and tells how all the characters can switch from one category to another. All these plots come out with Al’s one thought, “how the oddity of them was beautiful and how that oddity was contrived to give them value. [...] He realized that children could be designed" (9). Al intentionally manages to make his children freaks. Along with the story of the Binwskis’ family, the boundaries between “norms” and “freaks” are challenged and redefined.…

Due to my life experiences I was able to view Tanneke as the bitter person Griet described. Throughout the novel there's a constant sense of jealousy between Griet and Tanneke. We see that when Griet first arrives at the Vermeer’s house she wants to get along with Tanneke, the other maid in the house. However, Tanneke's rude and adverse attitude along with her need for superiority over Griet, continuously puts her in an uncomfortable and vulnerable situation preventing them from becoming friends. The hatred was sparked when Griet was receiving attention from Van Ruijven and the master which made her jealous that people liked Griet more than her. This further caused Tanneke to retaliate in childish acts of revenge. In regards to this Tanneke's…

On the surface, it is similar to the sex and drugs filled television shows that consume the media these days, but underneath that surface each episode has a moral to be learned, and the show overall represents many different assumptions America makes on what a “typical” family is.…

I think the main conflict in this story that drives this plot to its outcome is Connie's conflict with her own perception of herself. I think that if she was not so assured that there was nothing else to her but her skin-deep looks, due to her mother's ridicule and her "better" sister, that she would not feel as if Arnold Friend truly appreciated her beauty and innocence. The conflict in the story is man vs. self. Connie is trying to figure out what is the best decision for herself. The constant manipulation from Arnold plays on her ability to make rational decisions, therefore she struggles to come up with an appropriate verdict to stay out of harm’s way. True, her confidence blinded her from Arnold's manipulative, well -researched and rehearsed…

At the beginning of the film, Kat and Patrick have an unhealthy relationship. They are lying to each other and not communicating properly. Patrick is keeps secrets about why he is making advances on Kat, and they both don’t talk to each other about their problems whenever one in their relationship comes up. Kat has a low self-esteem, which is shown when she goes to the party and decides to get wasted on alcohol and perform because “that’s what everybody does at a party.” The largest problem in their relationship hits during the climax of the movie, in which Kat finds out that Patrick was actually being paid by Joey to woo her. Rather than ignoring this gigantic rock in their relationship, they use healthy techniques to deal with the problem. They talk to each other about how they feel, without any lies or with-holding of truth. By the end of the movie, their relationship has transformed from an unhealthy relationship filled with lies and blindness to a healthy one with open emotions and good communication. This relationship strengthened Kat’s self-esteem as well, because later in the film, she admits that she chose to disappoint people early on so that she wouldn’t have to live up to other people’s expectations, but realizes that that…
