A Job… A Career… A Life “A garbage man.” As a 4-year old, if I would have been asked what I wanted to be when I grew up that would have been my response. Watching him come was the highlight of my week; I wanted to be just like him! Now, twelve years later, my mindset is significantly different. A job and the college required to get that job is looming closer than ever. As I have considered more prospects than dumping garbage for the rest of my life, I have decided I want to be a veterinarian. Many factors play into why I want to make this my career. Veterinarians experience a new challenge each and every day, have multiple areas to specialize and practice in, and can assist members of the community.
Veterinarians work with a wide variety of animals and, unlike a human doctor, they have to learn the treatments and care for many species. This requires a minimum of eight years of post-high school education. Because of this, it is a high paying, exciting, challenging job where every day I would get to work on an animal that is different from the one the day previous. My fear as a teenager has been that I will get an office job that would be more boring than I could stand. I am a hands-on worker, not someone who can sit for long periods of time. Because of the diversity of this career I don’t have to worry about getting bored.

They help community members by giving their animals the vaccines they need to keep them healthy and happy. Many veterinarians are also involved with shelters and rescue efforts. In the home I lived in a few years previous there were two kittens dropped off in very bad shape. My brother and I tried to help them back into good health. Through this experience I learned of my love for helping animals in trouble. As a veterinarian, I would have the knowledge of how to really help abandoned, lost, and sick animals in my
