A Career As A College Player

College one and done players agree that college was a good choice and said they wanted to stay longer if they could, making it seem college was a good thing in the end. From David Wharton of the LA Times and up for the “Best American Sports Writing” award, “ You kind of give up on that college life he said. I only got one year of it and you kind of miss that, going to class and hanging out with friends.”(qtd. Wharton 2). As Conley says this, more and more one and done players do regret leaving school early a year or two. Players have the opportunity for a fun, interesting life away from home, making new friends, and growing as a person. The rule provides great opportunities for an undergraduate education and can motivate players to stay longer. Going to classes for a year or graduating in four, the players learn so much and apply that to their game. The NBA and NCAA want these players to have the opportunity to attend college or university for at least a year. From the local Nebraska campus newspaper, “The Daily Nebraskan”, “ The current rule intact gives the players a fair shot at getting an education”(qtd. McDiffett 2). The point here shows that the rule provides an education, as most regular students can’t receive a scholarship or even get into their desired schools. This rule truly provides a great, rare opportunity for players to embrace their educational side outside of the game. With even a year or two of a college education players realize that in the future, they want to finish what they started. Players have the chance to receive a degree or finish a major that will last a lifetime and help them in their retirement years. Superstar Kevin Durant left Texas after one year because of his family’s financial issues. But, his mother always did want herself to finish college but couldn’t since she had to take care of Kevin and his brother. So, Kevin continued his education in the offseason not for just him but for his Mom too. (qtd. Abrams 4) Though that was in 2009 Durant showed he still cared about an education not just to show he had one but to feel accomplished and fulfilled in his life. Even legend Vince Carter went to his college graduation at North Carolina back in 2001 the same day as his playoff game against the 76ers. Vince knew he would receive criticism as he missed the potential game winning shot for the Raptors as they were eliminated that same day.
