He told his brother, “Some day I'm gonna give you one just like it ... then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Christmas windows that I've been trying to tell you about." In chapter 1 of “Dude You’re A Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School,” the author mentions that “one of the ways a queer theory approach can bring studies of masculinity in line with other feminist theorizing is to uncouple the male body from definitions of masculinity.” What he means by “uncouple the male body from definitions of masculinity” is that the word male is normally associated with masculinity and in order to fully understand these theories we must stop genderizing the word masculinity. Instead, we must see masculinity as an organizing principle of social life (Pascue). It is important to decu…

“Our Christmas tree was never even an inch under eight feet, and it took the whole family hours to decorate it. Each year one of us was honored by being allowed to place the angel at the top of the tree, while Father help us up in his strong arms.” (Pelzer 22). This passage is a simile because this is how we are in Christmas, our tree would be long and it takes us a whole hour to decorate it. We are allowed to place the star on top of the tree, and that is what’s amazing about it. This brought my attention and interested me because it showed how good the mother was to her children and hoe kind she treated them, because the name of the chapter called Good Times. It also shows that the kid remember how good she was and then how she turned…

In the beginning of the story, Paul seems to be a typical teenage boy: in trouble for causing problems in the classroom. As the story progresses, the reader can infer that Paul is rather withdrawn. He would rather live in his fantasy world than face reality. Paul dreaded returning home after the Carnegie Hall performances. He loathed his "ugly sleeping chamber with the yellow walls," but most of all, he feared his father. This is the first sign that he has a troubled homelife. Next, the reader learns that Paul has no mother, and that his father holds a neighbor boy up to Paul as "a model" . The lack of affection that Paul received at home caused him to look elsewhere for the attention that he craved.…

The Things a Brother Knows by Dana Reinhardt is the story of Levi Katznelson. Levi is concerned about his brother, Boaz Katznelson, who just returned from Iraq. Albeit his brother was deemed healthy, Levi still believes there is something wrong with Boaz. Once Boaz leaves for his trip, Levi is left with a choice either to stay and let his brother be, or follow his brother and discover Boaz’s problem. The Things a Brother knows is a greatly written book and I enjoyed the storyline throughout the book. I believe what made this book so great is the storyline, the characters themselves, and setting of the story.…

Paul’s innocent determination to please his mother is what leads him down the path to his ultimate destruction. Paul’s mother first plants the seeds of this determination through her never-ending references to money, or lack thereof. Due to this repeated refrain, Paul imagines the house echoes his mother’s words by whispering: “There must be more money!” (Lawrence, page#). His mother attributes the family’s lack of money to their tendency to be unlucky – his father is unlucky at making money and she is unlucky for marrying him – rather than recognizing it is her own spendthrift ways which have put the family in their financial crisis. Paul asserts that he, however, is lucky because God, speaking to him through his rocking horse, has told him so. He…
