John Wilkes Booth Biography
On May 10, 1838, John Wilkes Booth was born near Bel Air, Maryland. Booth was the second youngest of ten children. His father, Junius Brutus Booth, was a well-known actor and was eccentric, with a reputation for heavy drinking. John and his siblings were raised on a farm, which was worked by the family 's slaves.
As a youngster, Booth attended the Milton Boarding School for Boys—and later St. Timothy 's Hall—sporadically. From a very young age, he was described as disarmingly handsome. To those who knew him, it seemed only natural that he would follow in his father 's footsteps, by gracing the stage with his charismatic presence.
When he turned 17, Booth

The plan involved bringing Lincoln to Richmond and demanding either peace or the release of Confederate soldiers as a ransom. On April 14, 1865, at precisely 10 p.m., Booth shot and killed Lincoln while he was watching a performance of Our American Cousin at Washington, D.C. 's Ford Theater. Directly after the shooting, Booth leaped onto the stage and yelled, "Sic semper tyrannis! The South is avenged!" Booth next jumped off the stage, breaking his leg in the process, but managed to make it to his get-away horse before anyone in the shocked crowd could stop him.
After crossing the Potomac River with some difficulty, Booth and his co-conspirators arrived at Richard G. Garret 's farm in Port Royal, Virginia. Investigators were in hot pursuit and on April 26, 1865, caught up to the criminals, who had been hiding in Garret 's barn. Booth was shot by the investigators, and when he still refused to surrender, they set the barn on fire. Booth crawled out, badly burned, and died soon after.
As you can tell, Booth was a very influential factor in the history of the 1800’s. What would have happened if John wouldn’t have assassinated President Lincoln on that cold, April evening? How much would our nation’s history have changed with Lincoln controlling the helm for his entire term?

William Steward was only injured while Johnson wasn’t even confronted. The plan to kidnap him in Ford’s Theater, I knew, wasn’t going to work because I had to ask myself one question: how am I going to kidnap the President of the United States in front of hundreds of people, especially when there was a Union major sitting right next to him? Lincoln was against everything I stood for. He was my enemy, and I could think of only one other option: kill!” he yelled.…

He knew the exact times he needed to be where and when. He was fortunate enough to overhear fellow actors in fords theatre talking about how the president was going to be there. This allowed him to be able to focus on the one place Lincoln would be. He had performed at Ford’s many times and knew the passageways and stairways well. He devised the perfect entrance and escape and executed it the exact way he wanted to. I do not believe a madman would be able to design such an intricate plan and execute it in such a timely manner. Because he was so zealous for the southern cause he wanted to make sure everything was planned perfectly and it did. He accomplished his goal in killing Lincoln and escaping the city however the way the assignation was received flabbergasting to…

Choosing my topic for National History Day was based on the long debated conspiracy of the reason behind the assassination of the President Lincoln. The majority of the history books written on this event condemned John Wilkes Booth as a national assassin, President killer, but rarely did they expand on why Booth pulled the trigger. I have gone in depth with my research to discover the answer and have produced a conclusion of Booth’s motives which was based on what in that era was called “the higher law”. The higher law in layman’s terms is based off moral and sometimes religious principle rather than follow the human law. It was believed that John Wilkes Booth’s motives might have been inspired by a man of the name John Brown.…

These men were Lewis Powell, David Herold, John Surratt Jr. Samuel Arnold, Michael O’Laughlen, and George Atzerodt. At this point the conspiracy was no longer set out to simply kill President Lincoln, but his Vice President, Andrew Johnson, and his Secretary of State, William Seward, as well.…

The morning of April 15, Abraham Lincoln died. The assassination of Lincoln shocked the country. He was the first president to be assassinated. The simple conspiracy in its most basic form states that Booth and a small group of friends at first planned to kidnap the president. This eventually resulted in assassination. In fact, the conspirators were to also assassinate Vice-President Johnson and Secretary of State Seward at the same time dealing a major blow to the government of the United States. Their goal was to give the South a chance to rise again. Booth saw himself as a hero. In his diary, John Wilkes Booth claimed that Abraham Lincoln was a tyrant and that Booth should be praised just as Brutus was for killing Julius Caesar. (Hanchett, 246) When Abraham Lincoln Secretaries Nicolay and Hay wrote their ten-volume biography of Lincoln in 1890 they "presented the assassination as a simple conspiracy." (Hanchett, 102)…
