On morning of September 11, 2001 a disaster occurred in the United States due to the terrorist attacks. Two planes where hijacked and were deliberately crashed into both towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. This disaster killed thousands of innocent people and Emergency management was called in from all over the US that day. This city didn’t have a plan in place for this type of disaster. Emergency Management is meant to make communities safe, less susceptible to disasters and hazards of any kind and to help communities manage and deal with a disaster after it has occurred. The emergency management team responded quickly as possible and accessed the disaster and made emergency plans accordingly.
First Response

9/11occurred the community in New York was in a state of emergency. After the planes hit both towers the emergency plan I believe was create along the way because this was a confirmed terrorist attack and the plan started with grounding all flights incoming and outgoing. Grounding all flights was for all airports across the country not just the ones in New York City (Valerie Lucus-McEwen, 2011). A command post was set up near the crash site where the fire department and chiefs can then be in command of the emergency response. There were Doctor’s, EMT’s and many other medical employee staffs and volunteers where there to assist and give medical attention to those wounded. Other responders to this disaster were police, cost guards and military. “State, territorial, and tribal governments have significant resources of their own, including emergency
Management and homeland security agencies, police departments, health agencies, transportation
Agencies, incident management teams, specialized teams, and the National Guard” (FEMA 2010).
The fire department were responsible for putting out the fire and assist in the recovery efforts after the World trade center collapse. The police were helping with evacuation efforts getting people away from the buildings and helping those that were in the building to get out. There were several fire fighter unit, police and military dispatched from other states to the 9/11 crash site to help with recovery efforts. “Local police, fire, emergency medical services (EMS), emergency management, public health and medical providers, public works, and other community agencies are often the first to be notified about a threat or hazard or to respond to an incident” (FEMA …show more content…
2101). What went wrong?
There were said to be radio problems for fire fighter that were going into the World trade center trying to evacuate it and those trying to put out the fire. The commander of the units was unable to keep track of them due to the lack of communication (Valerie Lucus-McEwen, 2011). The commander over the units couldn’t determine whether or not he needed to send back up in to help his units or to remove his units from this hazardous building and even after the collapse of the building radio communication was down. This was a hazard because radio communication is important not over to the first responder’s life but for the lives that the first responders are trying to save.
Emergency Management Crew
The New York City Department of Design and Construction were the man agency monitoring the recovery efforts after the World Trade Center collapse they were responsible for examining the stability of the collapse building and to determine whether or not the surrounding building of the collapse towers were at any risks. They were also responsible getting cranes that would support all the debris from the collapse towers. In efforts to make everything more organized they divided the disaster site into four zones and each zone had rescue workers, lead contractors, and structural engineers and even subcontractors. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), US Army, OSHA and New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) were there on the ground providing the needed support(Valerie Lucus-McEwen, 2011).
Hazards after the Collapse
The hazards that were there after the World Trade Center Collapse diesel fuel tanks seven stories below and nearly 2,000 cars that were parked posed a risk containing gasoline in their tanks some cars exploded and burned already (Valerie Lucus-McEwen, 2011). Another hazard was the US Customs Service who was also located in the World Trade center had 1.0 million rounds of ammunition and weapons in a vault (Valerie Lucus-McEwen, 2011). These were hazards after that response teams had to also face after the initial collapse of the towers.
Health Effects Many firefighters and several other first responders were exposed to toxins which lead to breathing issues for them.
Even years after the initial disaster many are still having lung complications and many other health issues such as cancer. According to a study done by the National Institute of Environmental Safety and Health they believe the rescue cure didn’t have proper protective give when they were cleaning up and were then exposed to all these toxins that were present(Valerie Lucus-McEwen, 2011). This is what is believed to be causing all the health issues among them.
Security at Airports
After 9/11 airport began to have stricter requirements to able to board an airplane. During 9/11 security at the airport wasn’t as heightened as it is now. The Department Of Home land security was created. TSA officials were trained better to do security checks (Valerie Lucus-McEwen, 2011). The attack on 9/11 was a wakeup call for the whole United States not just New York because this disaster could have happened anywhere in the United
States.
Abstract
On morning of September 11, 2001 a disaster occurred in the United States due to the terrorist attacks. Two planes where hijacked and were deliberately crashed into both towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. This disaster killed thousands of innocent people and Emergency management was called in from all over the US that day. Though New York City didn’t have a emergency plan in place for this specific disaster after this disaster occurred they heightened security everywhere. They now have emergency plans in place not help prevent this from happening again and to also help make recovery efforts go smoother.
