7 Step Problem Solving: Car Suspension Problem

Definition: The real problem is that the car is creating further damage due to the bad suspension. Creating a bigger problem. The ride is bumpy, the tires are wearing down wrong, the fuel mileage is poor, the engine has more strain on it due to rough driving and the height of the car is drooping down, causing unsafe wear on the inner wheel wells, while also creating a risk of a blown tire.

Data Collection: The struts on the car ARE bad, and need to be replaced.

Cause Analysis: The car was manufactured in 1993, making the struts just over 20 years old.

Solution Planning Implementation: We are going to search for the specific car parts and try to find some in our price range, and then buy a car manual to install the parts ourselves.

Evaluation of Effects: It worked for the most part, the ride is a lot better, fuel economy increased, the tire wear is minimal compared to before, and the car is no longer sinking down into the tires.

Standardization: We can recall this information in the future, if this car or any future car we own has a suspension related problem. We will also be able to help out family member and friends if the problem ever happens to them, with our expertise.

Evaluate your Process: We did hit a few nitches while working on the suspension, damaged a few CV boots, forgot to grease some things and even got a few minor injuries. We can learn from these mistakes for next time, and warn others in the same situation if they plan to do the work themselves as well.
