It was Tuesday, March first, 2011, my mother woke me up so I can start getting ready for school. I rose with eager anticipation, just four more days until my thirteenth birthday and I just couldn’t wait. I brushed my teeth and hurried down to eat the complimentary breakfast offered to us by the hotel we were staying at. You see we had been staying at a hotel for the past five months because the home we had been renting was foreclosed on so the utility companies turned off the power and the electricity. We had to get down at just the right time so that there was a small crowd but a lot of food so that we can take food back to the room to save for dinner. After breakfast, we…

Slowly the questions faded from my mind, and I tried to make peace with my current situation. I started reminiscing. My memories shuffled in my head… and boom, it was the week of Jess’s first prom. I remember it so vividly. Jess was on cloud nine. Everything was so perfect. A star athlete, Honor Roll student, great leader, vice president of her class, and she even had college recruits looking at her. The most astonishing part of it all was she was only sixteen and a sophomore in high school. She bought the perfect prom dress. It was so elegant- strapless, blush pink gown with silver sequence along the bust. All her appointments were made. Hair, nails, and even against her prior morals, a…

Our plan was to drive through Nevada and into Utah. We stayed the night at the Beehive Inn. It was the only hotel close to us and there was only one room available because the Udells cancelled, so we were the Udells for the night. The room turned out to be a honeymoon room and it had only one bed a well , but this was more awkward than the night before. In the morning we started for Colorado Springs. Once we got there instead of buying a room we were able to stay at one of the sorority houses at Roger’s college. His friend Bronwyn let us stay there. There was a party at one of the other houses close by and so she let me borrow her clothes since I had nothing fancy. Her style was how mine once was: It was full of cute shirts, the ones that were super soft and cute. I hadn't dressed nice since “it” happened. The party was fun, but I had left early. The next morning my suitcase was already downstairs, but Bron left me one of her outfits to wear. We were on our way and there was a note with my suitcase she had taken most of my clothes and replaced them with hers. I was a bit mad, but later on I knew I would thank her. We headed towards Kansas…

I continued on the path to her house, with a tiny nervous smile on my face, as I didn’t know what to expect from her. As I began to approach her holding my gift basket in one hand, I raised it up towards her, and began to…

After school I rushed home so I could make it to my doctor’s appointment on time. Once I got back home from the doctor, I began the long process of getting ready for the party. Showering, choosing clothes, doing my hair, applying make up and making cupcakes for the birthday girl. Not being so savvy with fashion, I struggled to choose the most “mature” outfit that I could find in my closet, just to attempt to fit in with the older crowd. When I finished decorating the cupcakes and doing my hair, I packed a small bag so I would be able to sleep over at Tori’s house later on that night. My mom and I got into the car and my mom proceeded to drive me to the party. On the way she made a sharp…
