In this case, the petitioners question their expulsion from that party and assail the validity of the election of new party leaders conducted by the respondents. Candidates and political parties contesting elections need to develop greater accountability and respect for the people they represent and the fear that the voters will not hesitate to reject and recall all of them should they become tainted or deviate from the path of public service. And if cleaning the politics requires total rethink and reform of our electoral structures, then so be it, and it is time to start the process. This will encourage honest and sincere candidates to enter politics knowing that voters want clean and nation-building politics, and that they have the tools to reject tainted…

For instance, in the weeks leading up to the November 2015 elections, President Thein Sein orchestrated the ouster of, Schwe Mann, his chief rival within the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), in an apparent effort to minimize his political risks, as Mann had recently aligned himself with the popular leader of the opposition, Aung San Suu Kyi (Radio Free Asia, 13 August 2015). This tension within the ruling party seemed, at the time, to belie Sein’s repeated gestures toward honest political discourse, fair elections, and a vigorous pursuit of acceptance by the international community. The hope (and, in fact, the promise) was that the military junta was gradually stepping aside in favour of a government elected by, and representative of, the people. After Sein’s crafty dismissal of his…

The need of an effective mechanism for the enforcement of judicial accountability, when needed, is a felt need and must be accepted. The method by which judges are selected has become a matter of considerable concern for the citizens of our state. Although judicial elections may always has been important and vital process, the selection process is now coming under particular scrutiny. Certainly attention to the issue is warranted: The provisions in place for judicial accountability all threatened by the spread and deepening of problems that, if left unattended, will erode the public's confidence in our judiciary.…

On March 27, 1998, private respondent Capco filed a certificate of candidacy for mayor of Pateros relative to the May 11, 1998 elections. Petitioner Benjamin U.
