It’s all about carefully rotating the lead vehicle. But hiding a train of undercover cop cars down a narrow residential street, now that is challenging. We carefully followed Dashawn’s Nissan from Interstate 40 to Briley Parkway, toward North Nashville. “Air one”, a Nashville Police Helicopter, flew high overhead, assisting us with surveillance. Two Tennessee Highway Patrol marked vehicles followed at a distance, so as not to alarm Dashawn. I could feel my heart begin to race as I carefully donned my tactical raid vest and gun belt; which is no easy task when you’re 6’4 and in a tiny, moving vehicle. There were about ten undercover vehicles following Dashawn’s X-terra, even I had a hard time discerning the police from everyday traffic on Briley Parkway. As the X-terra neared Dashawn’s residence, Dashawn became aware of the abnormal amount of vehicles following closely behind him. In the Mustang, Matt and I were right behind the X-terra. I drew my service pistol from my thigh holster and cracked the passenger side door, waiting for Dashawn’s Nissan to come to a stop. The Nissan turned left into the driveway and came to a stop, I jumped out of the mustang, my Glock trained on the driver’s side of the vehicle, and yelled “POLICE” as loud as I could. The Nissan quickly accelerated out of the driveway, with nowhere to go but through the yards, in the direction of police…

SWAT teams had been (rarely) utilized from the 1960s for high-profile emergencies, such as hostage situations and hijackings, and later to combat terrorism. From the 1980s many SWAT teams were formed with federal help in localities, to be used primarily and with increasing frequency for serving drug warrants on suspected drug dealers. The SWAT raids, often ruthlessly carried out in minority communities, became very common (40,000 deployments in 2001) and resulted in many unwarranted and unjustified fatalities, trauma and other damage. The transformation from community to military policing began with the passing by the Congress in 1981 of the Military Cooperation with Law Enforcement Act; the act authorized police forces of several different types to access a variety of military facilities and resources, for the purported purpose of drug interdiction. Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton enthusiastically continued the drug policies of the Reagan administration. The size of federal disbursements to the police of a given locality was linked to the number Drug War arrests made…

Currently, the majority of police departments have paramilitary units, or SWAT teams, many of which have received their training from military instructors. One of the main duties of these teams is to carry out drug-related search warrants. Many of these are what are called ‘no-knock’ entries, which means the officers are authorized to enter the premises to be searched without any warning to the occupants. This is so the suspects do not have time to either flee or hide or destroy any evidence.…
