In my opinion, I think having a 504 plan for students is a good idea. What I like about it is that every child is getting help in a way that is best for them. The 504 plan allows students with disabilities to learn and participate in the general education curriculum. Just because a student has a disability does not mean that they should not be allowed to be in a education setting with other students who do not have a disability. One of the things that I like about the 504 plan is that the students get to stay in the general classroom but the student may get a different accommodation or modification than the other students in the classroom. When providing services and curriculum under Section 504, administrators at my case study school must ensure their teachers are supplying students with the correct accommodations and modifications. The policy that I chose is R-5122. The policy explains the steps on how an educator is to communicate the progress on students. In other words, it breaks down the grades and how the educator is to convey what the grades mean to the caretakers. R-5122 states that caretakers are to be informed on their child’s grades every 18 weeks if the child is in elementary and quarterly from grades 6-12. In the policy is recommended that at least one care taker is present during the parent-teacher conference from the beginning of the year. Additionally, R-5122 suggests that caretakers are to refer to the county’s portal to stay up-to-date on their child’s progress. As nervous as I was when I walked into Saint Joseph Catholic School (K-8) for my first day of kindergarten, I never thought I would be able to leave after 6th grade and enter the world of middle school. For one, before this class, I thought that a 504 plan was similar to having an IEP. However, I am now aware that if a student has an Individualized Education Plan, they cannot also have a 504 Plan. A 504 plan protects a person with a disability or other conditions from being discriminated against in programs receiving federal assistance. For example, in one of the scenarios presented at the end of class, a student was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. However, having cerebral palsy doesn't imply that a student needs the instruction to be differentiated, so instead of getting an Individualized Education Plan, this student was given a 504 Plan. My journey to become a Counselling Psychologist began in 2008 when as a Life Coach; I had a self referral who suffered from anxiety over his forthcoming exams in his second year at university. I started collaboratively setting goals to manage his workload and set timetable into manageable chunks through asking him challenging questions so that e can start to think for himself.
