FIVE TYPES OF CLAIMS Most no all arguments can be categorized according to one of the five types of claims. Each kind of argument can be identified by one of these claims. These claims are fact, definition, cause, value, and policy. Each claim is set for one argument, well one kind of argument. In this paper I will be giving small examples of what each claim means and how it is used.

First, the claim of fact is explaining how it happened and does it exist. It is making a paper that is true; a paper on events that are factual, something that can be proven throughout history. Within these arguments you have to make sure that you can get the information and show evidence about your claims. Questions that are answered through this claim is did it happen? , it is true? , does it exist? , and is it a fact? The kind of support associated with this claims of facts is that all the facts must be factual in claim. The types are facts, statistics, real examples, and quotations from reliable authorities. The best method to a claim to fact argument it should be in chronological order. So that it can be traced back to where it came from. That’s a brief description of a fact of claims argument. Second, the claim of definition is explaining how it is classified. It is making sure that what it is it can be explained and shown in the best of light. Questions that can be asked are what is it? What it is like? How should it be classified? How should it be interpreted? How does its usual meaning change in a particular context? Claims of definition is used for supportive type of papers. It is mostly used to support like in the beginning of an essay. The type of support used to prove claims of definition are reference to reliable authorities and accepted sources. Most of these arguments are compare and contrast type arguments. That’s a brief description of a fact of claims argument. Third, the claim of cause is explaining what cause it and what its effects are. This claims answers the questions: what caused it? , where or what is its source? , why did it happen? , what are the effects? , what will probably be the results over the short term? , over the long term? These are the questions that are answered while writing a claim of cause argument. One example of a claim of cause argument is legalizing marijuana could have beneficial effects for medicine. This is one of the types of papers that you write about in this claim. It can really go two ways, but also its something that can be shown and also have a long term paper kind of like seeing into the future. Types of support that is associated with claims of cause is the probability of cause and effect relationship, factual data, statistics, analogies, and both literal and historical analogies. That is a brief description of claims of cause argument. Forth, the claims of value is explaining is if it is good or bad and if the criteria will help us decide. It is saying is the argument good or is the argument bad. If the argument can be shown good or bad. Questions that are answered are: Is it good or bad? How bad? How good? , Of what worth is it? , Is it moral or immoral? , Who thinks so? , What do those people value? , What values or criteria should I use to determine its goodness or badness? , Are my values different from other people’s values or from the author’s values? Types of support associated with claims of value are appeals to value motivational appeals, analogies, both literal and figurative, authorities, induction, and definitions. The organization used for this claims are applied criteria, topical organization, and narrative. That is a brief description of claims of cause argument. Finally, the claims of policy explains what should we do about it and what should be our future course of action. This claim seems to be more like what the military uses. It is like saying what should we do about the problem at hand and how will it affect the future. Questions that are asked by this claim are: What should we do? , How should we act? , What should future policy be? , How can we solve this problem? , What concrete course of action should we pursue to solve the problem? Types of support that are associated with claims of policy are: data and statistics, moral and commonsense appeals, motivational appeals, appeals to values, literal analogies, argument from authority, cause, definition, and deduction. The organization strategies for claims of policy is problem solution. That is a brief description of claims of policy argument. In conclusion, in this paper I helped to explain the five claims of arguments. Each kind of argument can be identified by one of these claims.
