5 Regrets of Life
1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
This was the most common regret of all. When people realize that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people had not honoured even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made.
It is very important to try and honour at least some of your dreams along the way. From the moment that you lose your health, it is too late. Health brings a freedom very few realise, until they no longer have it.
2. I wish I didn’t work so hard.
This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children’s youth and their partner’s companionship. Women also spoke of this regret. But as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners. All of the men I nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence.
By simplifying your lifestyle and making conscious choices along the way, it is possible to not need the income that you think you do. And by creating more space in your life, you become happier and more open to new opportunities, ones more suited to your new lifestyle.
3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.
Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Many developed illnesses relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result.
We cannot control the reactions of others. However, although people may initially react when you change the way you are by speaking honestly, in the end it raises the relationship to a whole new and healthier level. Either that or it releases the unhealthy relationship from your life. Either way, you win.
4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
Often they

Although the number of men entering the nursing profession has increased word wide, (Madoka et al, 2006) and most western countries have men working in nursing jobs, they usually constitute a minority, (Streubert, 1994). This imbalance actually was due to historical and cultural rational. For example; Florence Nightingale believed that nursing was a natural extension of women and motherhood, and she believed that all women were nurses and men were not capable of being nurses and thus were not allowed to enroll in nursing education \ training, (Eswi El Sayed, 2011), therefore men were purposefully excluded from entering the profession, (Evans, 2004; Mackintosh, 1997).…

Nagel makes a good point when he said: “the fact that all good things in life come to an end is reason for regret.” Some people want more to enjoy in their lives. Others are terrified of death, so they live in fear, not living life to the fullest. He said that it is scary to think that when a person dies, the world with go on without them and they…

This is a reflective essay based on my experiences whilst on my six week medical placement on a haematology ward at a local hospital. The aim of this essay is to discuss the psychological and sociological impact on the family when a loved one dies, and then focus on how the nurse supported the husband and relatives through their loss. I chose this particular incident as I felt very strongly about the care given to this patient shortly before her death, and felt the need to reflect on it further.…

Though countless bodies discouraged my dreams I still continued to believe in myself. Although, countless bodies stressed the time it will take to live my dream I proceeded by responding with a quote by Earl Nightingale that states, “Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. Time will pass anyway.” I was not and am not alone through it all, I had my fiery passion for alternative medicine push me through it all. My passion and love for alternative medicine, like Herbalism, got me through and is getting me through the jealousy, stress, and discouragement that comes with pursuing a career in medicine.…

These days’ nurses are ‘doing more and more with less resources’. Our profession has been known as being of a co-dependent nature. This nature is not only reflected in our career choice but also frequently in our family management which can place double the stress on the nurse. Demands on nurses can lead to burnout or compassion fatigue. This condition not only prevents nurses from giving their patients the optimal care they deserve but can also result in a very unhappy life for the nurse them self. Nursing must work hard and work constantly…
