5.05 Economics Should Free Trade Be A Goal - Honors

A large portion of people are against outsourcing for the reason that it can lead to increases in unemployment in the country, while foreigners are offered employment instead. This is because it is less expensive for companies to hire people in other countries to perform a job than it is to pay someone in America that will give the same labor. Americans are paid more for a job than others in developing countries as the cost of living in the US is higher. Those in support of outsourcing believe that this practice will benefit the economy in the future. This belief is housed on the concept that with more successful foreign countries, there will be more exports sold from the US.

China is a country that has been in development for the past few years. One of China’s main contributors to its growth is the United States’ companies that have stationed factories within China to avoid the higher costs of paying Americans for labor. Prince Industries is an example of a metal parts manufacturer that has outsourced to China for lower costs and thus higher profits. Companies also outsource to developed countries such as Hong Kong. Some of these companies would include: Microsoft, Nokia, Coca-Cola, Intel, and Walt Disney. Hong Kong has been outsourced to because its legal systems are preferable to China’s as well its as low cost tariffs towards foreign countries. The position of the island is ideal as well in the center of the Asia-Pacific land mass.

American companies can be stopped outsourcing by barriers set up by the government. These can exist in the form of various taxes and fees that are required in order to outsource production. These fees act as a great deterrence as they make the companies pay more than they would if they do not perform any outsourcing, and keep production within the country.

    One thing I learned quickly from these videos is that labor is varied from country to country. Policies tend to drive the unemployment rate. A recent study by the University of California shows that approximately 14 million white-collar jobs are vulnerable to outsourcing overseas. We are not just talking about call centers who you can barely understand and get so aggravated by the end of the call you just agree and hang up. No, we are talking about architecture, IT, and even medical and legal services. These jobs are the ones that assist in funding our education, health and infrastructure. (Magnani, 2006) So while these are great things for a corporation, as they would make dramatically more money for the cheaper labor, they aren’t looking at the impacts on the economy of America. If 14 million American’s were to lose their jobs, do you think they would go out and buy unnecessary items, or spend what they are scrounging up for food for a new car? No. In the end I believe that these outsourcings of jobs will only hinder these companies long-term. Unless they are an international organization such as Ford or some other company that creates products around the globe, they should not be able to outsource jobs outside of our country.…

    Outsourcing jobs is a major epidemic facing the American people today, because it is leading to higher and higher unemployment. Many critics argue that outsourcing benefits the American majority because it makes the products purchased at home in America a lot cheaper than they would be.     One concern has been frequently voiced by the opponents of free market or globalization is that falling international trade barriers destroy manufacturing jobs in wealthy advanced economies such as US and Western Europe. The critics argue a free market worldwide allows firms to move manufacturing activities to countries where wage rates are much lower. Furthermore estimates suggest that the pool of global labor may have quadrupled between 1985 and 2005 with most of the increase taking place after 1990, due to the entry of China, India, and states from Eastern Europe into the global trading system, along with global population growth. Other things being equal, one might conclude that this enormous expansion in the global labor force, when coupled with expanding international trade, would have depressed wages in developed nations. The example of Harwood Industries; citied by D.L. Bartlett and J.B. Steele, journalists for the Philadelphia Inquirer, supports the concern mentioned above. The both journalists suggests that, Harwood Industries, a U.S. clothing manufacturer closed its U.S. operations, where it paid workers $9/hr. and shifted manufacturing to Honduras, where textile workers get $0.48/hr. Because of moves such as this, argue Bartlett and Steele, the wage rates of poorer Americans have fallen significantly over the past quarter of century. In the past few years, the same fear has been applied to the services, which have increasingly been outsourced to nations with lower labor costs.
