Irony, satire, parody, humor and epigrams are deeply connected by having one main thing in common: they are usually meant to hurt the intellectual self of someone. We use it in our everyday’s life to make fun of people, or simply because someone is annoying and we would like them to stop, without being “too” rude.…

“Whoa! Didn’t see that coming…”. Situational irony is an extremely common literary device that plays a critical role throughout a variety of stories. It not only creates suspense but surprises the reader as well. This can be shown through the three short stories entitled, “The Possibility of Evil”, “Just Lather, That’s All” and “The Skating Party”. It is critical that situational irony be used for effect in Shirley Jacksons', “The Possibility of Evil”.…

The story begins with Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansley taking their daughters around the United States. The story describes how the women spend their time and their actions. The mothers talk about their life when they were younger and their relationship with their parents. The rest of the story follows the girls and displays mixed emotions between characters. I feel the "big picture" of the story was competition and jealousy among friends.…

“Poor people put a low value on themselves and their efforts” (Daymond John). This represents the great work many underprivileged people must go through to earn simple things that would be easy to acquire for people of a wealthy society. People trapped in a lower class have a difficult time attaining happiness. A poor maid’s daughter struggles for a simple friendship and to gain respect from her peers and adults alike, but fails to accomplish this. A bright girl with the highest grades in her school wishes to receive the Scholarship jacket, a token of her hard work in school for eight years, but her social status and wealth conflict with reaching her wish. A woman who marries a poor husband desires the luxury and finery of being wealthy, but she fails to find this wealth and is obliged to find happiness with hard work and struggle. All these people were denied the same rights and opportunities that wealthier people have, making it harder for them to find happiness and reach their goals.…

In the four narratives that I read there is not really any contradictory evidence. In fact, a lot of the points made in one were also made in the other narratives. One thing that all the narratives talked about was having shared roles between the two parents. It states in narrative five, “We must share equally all the daily chores and financial burdens. He must do as much child caring as I will do” and it states something similar in narrative one, “Michael is a very supportive husband. He helps out a lot around the house and he even does all the cooking and cleaning” and in narrative three, “My husband picks up the children from soccer practice and ballet class”. I thought that this was interesting evidence because in the past and in gender stereotypes, the mothers would be the one taking care of the parenting and children and the fathers would be bringing in the financial part. But in all four narratives it talked about shared roles. I think that it is pretty consistent because most people’s goals in life are to be married and have children and society almost has a certain way to accomplish and carry out those goals. One thing you could look more into…
